Just published a blog post about the new CSS Anchor Positioning API! ⚓ I’ve been learning about it over the past few weeks, and it’s friggin’ great, but it also took me a minute to really get the hang of it. My goal in this post is to share the most useful bits, so you can start using it today. 🔥

Getting Started with Anchor Positioning • Josh W. Comeau

For decades, one of the most notoriously-challenging problems on the web has been sticking one element to another element, for things like tooltips and nested menus. The CSSWG has decided to provide a...

Here's a fun edge case with scroll-linked-view-transitions: you *can* scroll, but not enough to complete the view transition :) Probably will have to implement a workaround that adds padding at the bottom of the page so it can complete the transition.

Screenshot of a scroll-linked view-transition half way the transition, due to it not being able to scroll further.

Scroll-driven animations or view transitions linked to the scroll timeline for a page-header that shrinks+becomes sticky when you scroll? I've implemented the first approach. Planning to try the second one as well. At the moment i don't fully understand all the pros/cons yet.

Dialog view transitions with invoker commands. 1. Intercept the "command" and "cancel" events. 2. Run startViewTransition(), in the callback move the view-transition-name from the <button> to <dialog> (and back). 3. Then call `showModal()` or `close()` to toggle the dialog.

We are THRILLED to announce that our Ecma standards will now use UUIDs instead of integers. ECMA-262 is now ECMA-39c506d7-731f-4220-8ffd-a68970945a65. Far more scalable. No two specs will ever collide again. Perfect system. Shortened forms like ECMA-39c506d7 are acceptable in casual conversation.

Finally solving the tooltip arrow usecase with a new CSS property called border-shape ⚠️ WIP early-stage API, timeline TBD, more info coming soon But it brings a lil tear to my eye to see this working, border & all 🥲 This demo uses anchored container queries + border-shape + a little animation
