Thoughts and words on the future of autos (and lately, the state of things). Alum of CNBC, Fidelity, Cornell. Opinions mine, but they can be yours too. E pluribus unum 🇺🇸. He/him.

in 2016 Elon Musk said he would build a fully automated factory in Fremont, California for the upcoming Model 3 and he then spent on the order of $2 billion on production lines that didn't work, forcing Tesla to assemble cars by hand in a tent but sure, now he's gonna do it on the moon

It is amazing that the biggest “you can just say things” guy in the universe has just said things to the point where he’s the richest person on the planet but also is thoroughly unentertaining in what he says.

I went to get my stuff out of my wrecked car yesterday. Some photos, since a few of you asked. 2021 Ford Escape Titanium, 2.0 EcoBoost, only 17k miles. Was in excellent shape before Monday afternoon. RIP buddy.

Crash-damaged 2021 Ford Escape. Note that the sunroof no longer sits flush. Crash damaged 2021 Ford Escape, showing damage to left rear bodywork and suspension. Crash damaged 2021 Ford Escape. The front end cap is on the ground in front of the car. Crash damaged 2021 Ford Escape.

Juuuust beginning the process of car shopping. My head says: "Get something sensible* right now and add a proper fun car later." My heart says: "Anything under 400 hp is for losers." I have a feeling the head is going to win, but. *"something sensible" might be an Accord Hybrid

Points from my Monday: - Airbag smoke is nasty - I guess it's good to have up-to-date CT scans of head and spine - I might get to go car shopping soon. (I'm fine. Young guy hit me on the highway. He took responsibility and apologized. Car is a mess but I'm just sore.)

No better example how broken US politics is than nuclear power Nuclear is outrageously expensive, wildly unpopular & totally unreliable in our new climate Yet both Dems & GOP are rushing to dump billions into it because tech billionaires think it’s manlier than wimpy (cheap, reliable) solar & wind

Hungary's new government is tested very early. Paks nuclear plant is about to go offline for the first time in 44 years because the Danube is drying up. That's nearly half the country's electricity. Collapsed supply & gas prices spiking throughout the region. Just brutal. apnews.com/article/hung...

bskyers: are any of you in the macro trading space? rates, fx, that sort of thing and open to chatting? a friend is curious about what work is like in that world; i am quite ignorant, but maybe one of you is willing to share with them.

Well done article on Elon Musk’s dehumanizing people—“racist” and “fascist” very much apply—by @polphilpod.bsky.social and @gregsargent.bsky.social. So why do states think this is a reliable defense contractor to partner with? Why do public figures promote his views by being active on his website?

When Elon Musk says "zero" children died in Africa from his DOGE cuts, he really means zero children died who are *worthy of any concern.* It's vile coded signaling to his global fascist audience. From me and @polphilpod.bsky.social, a deep dive into Musk's fascism: newrepublic.com/article/2135...
