I am trying ONCE AGAIN to get through all of Epstein's birthright citizenship book to try to reconstruct and answer the whole "argument" and it is so agonizing because every sentence requires 20 to explain why it's so horribly confused. A representative sample (sorry for too long for alt text):

i truly love reading long books. they really are like organic beasts, developing and growing as the author ruminates and changes directions. if a book is long enough it will contradict itself at some point and depending on the author the contradiction might be productive AND provocative.

i actually appreciate this section because i do want it on record that originalism and history and tradition analyses are expressly transphobic. it is history and tradition for a jurist to use a party’s birth pronouns to refer to them

Judge James Ho seems very upset that the Supreme Court, in a ruling written by Justice Kavanaugh that upheld bans on transgender athletes participating in women's and girls sports, used a female pronoun in the case caption (as it was in lower courts)

becoming clearer by the day that both the critics of fukuyama and the scolds who criticize the critics of fukuyama for misunderstanding him both misunderstand what it is hegel meant by “end of history.”

lmao. hegel’s owl of minerva, a fundamental key to the philosophy of right (and history), is just meaningless when confronted with the political scientist’s ambition

In the preface to the Philosophy of Right, Hegel explains that philosophy "is its own time apprehended in thought," and that as a philosopher one can no more go beyond one's time and predict the future than a man could leap over the giant statue that once stood on the island of Rhodes. Despite this warning we will look ahead to try to understand both the prospects and limitations of the current worldwide liberal revolution, and what effect it will have on international relations.

I don’t understand why people just jump to the conclusion that voters are the root of electoral outcomes but don’t consider that the people who control the most sophisticated ‘info’ output & surveillance networks on the globe have figured out how to reliably subvert the democratic process by now

another funny moment in fukuyama where he wants to distinguish his theory of recognition as the basis of liberal democracy from social contractarian theory but i’m not sure how his description is not precisely that of a social contract.

Popular self-government abolishes the distinction between masters and slaves; everyone is entitled to at least some share in the role of master. Mastery now takes the Form of the promulgation of democratically determined laws, that is, sets of universal rules by which man self-consciously masters himself. Recognition becomes reciprocal when the state and the people recognize each other, that is, when the state grants its Citizens rights and when citizens agree to abide by the state's laws.
The only limitations on these rights occur when they become self-contradictory, in other words, when the exercise of one right interferes with the exercise of another. EoH 203.

the greatest psychopolitical lesson of the 20th century was given in the gymnasium of the nuremberg prison the day the infamous defendants were executed. their last words before being hung were not words of contrition but glorification of germany.
