There’s a lot of reasons I’ve never tried to flip my fic into novels but among them is if the novel did well enough there’d for sure be people who worked to destroy me after tracking down my ~questionable morality~ fic and a few maybe bad comments and I’m exhausted in advance knowing that.

Today in @thenation.com: a harrowing piece written from inside the Dilley ICE detention center by Maryam Tahmasebi, a green card holder who's been locked up along with her husband and son for months despite none of them committing any crime. www.thenation.com/article/soci...
One Woman’s Message From the Hell of ICE Detention
My husband, son, and I have been locked up for months—despite being permanent residents with no criminal record. It is an unendurable, unending nightmare.

I just can’t participate in unspooling dog rates. My mean quips won’t make a difference. My bringing up well actually to people who just want to enjoy things won’t stop that account. I’m going to unfollow and stare at the wall for a bit and then get on with things, that’s where I’m at, zero glory.
okay but this is just a really bizarre way to frame this when the reason ad blockers exist is because of the way the web is structured around advertising and the way the web is structured is, quite notoriously, the root of some unimaginably wide-reaching 'negative social consequences' as you put it
Ya i mean there's a reason that I said "if they never existed" and not "you, the person reading this, are a bad person if you are using an ad-blocker" but a lot of people read it as the second because they suspect deep down that they are just making a selfish decision and get defensive
I’m learning that the people who gamified paragraphs are having trouble reading books. www.axios.com/2026/08/11/r...
op treated me to a self-link :( but thing is I don’t feel yelled at or guilty and their self-link still isn’t my point :( UBI or giving people houses solves poverty and homelessness. I’m being big swing here but I’m also making an argument that I believe can be parsed beyond blaming me, again.
Yes we live in a society but society could be guaranteed income levels, pbs-style media entities, consumers who can afford to spend on articles w regulated ads, without giving up a savings account or idk eating. “Journalism would be better if y’all didn’t block ads!” phew think bigger, friend.
We’re dicing this up in expected ways but imo it’s garnish on the main dish—consumers with equitable access to capital spend more. We’ve run the numbers: cash flow and regulation solve the problems. Users with adblock aren’t the cause even if they’re a petty contributor. Individualized blame, again!
everyone — consumers, publishers, writers — would wind up better off if web browser ad-blockers didn't exist and the rationalizations for using one are mostly clever justifications for what's just selfish behavior with obvious negative social consequences.
It’s terrible to slightly misread or get something wrong on the internet. It’s past criminal; it’s something no one else has ever done and is also unforgivable. The social fabric is torn, and you’re in a freefall. Worst thing possible I tell you.
I’ve talked about this so often with fam/friends this year. Just endless “isn’t stuff getting worse? like all stuff it’s just worse isn’t it.” And not simply shrinkflation or narrowing one production margin — it’s broad spectrum worse of nearly everything we consume.
I remember when someone tried to argue with me about this on here, saying it was survivorship bias, and not my own comparisons of the same brands' material quality and stitching over the past 30+ years. Anyway, yes shit is actually more poorly made now than it used to be even a short while ago.
The people I love would send this to me with a hard C

Heartbroken about Jackie. I hope Shadow is able to find another mate; he’s such a doting father.

Update from someone who appears to know what actually happened bsky.app/profile/john...
The project manager could have saved himself some grief by saying what actually happened, which is that the standard archaeological process was followed: evaluation revealed Bronze Age features so the cable was re-routed slightly to avoid them, as confirmed by a strip, map and record exercise

The long, strange, 500-year history of the American dollar, the currency that rules the world even when we mismanage it. My latest. newrepublic.com/article/2137...
Why Does the World Put Up With the Dollar?
The global economy depends on the U.S. dollar, even when the U.S. acts erratically.

Anyone who thinks it’s overpriced: it really isn’t. Expensive, yes! A gouge move, no. Really cool stuff with tons of potential applications (lol I’m spinning with quilt-related nonsense).
Not going to gatekeep this. Sewable magnetic cord that's washable from this company called Softmag. I took the plunge to see if it actually was legit. Worth it to just splurge for the 10 yards tbh cuz the 1 yard is overpriced. This is life changing for cosplay. www.softmagclosure.com
In the past two weeks I drove all over the northeast and it’s only mildly creepy how I can input my license plate and find various tolls and pictures of my car and a timeline of my locations. 😃

I was with someone this past week who’s very Resist Bad Man & posited to me we were about out of it “before anything got destroyed.” She was quiet for a long time when I offered a lot already is, but it’s widespread melt under the glacier & we won’t realize it until a much later great collapse.
Trump II has profound consequences that will last a century: -destruction of administrative state & civil service -extreme wealth concentration, tech oligarchy -climate rollbacks -end of rule of law w/o pushback incentivizes future backsliding -Iran Pundits hate this because it sounds shrill
This has so much against it from the jump: caring about rape and a Black suspect. And then becomes a travesty in so many directions against so many lives.
(Content warning: sexual abuse, violence) Anthony Broadwater spent 16 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit: the rape of bestselling author Alice Sebold. When he was exonerated in 2021, many were incensed at how long it had taken to fix the injustice. But the story doesn't end there.

My most nihilistic view post Biden/Trump is that good policy will never be rewarded by voters even when it's what voters were asking for (regardless if the policy is good or bad), and therefore the goal when in power should be: * Policy Longevity * Institutional Reform * Electoral Reform
I don’t wanna single out this person, because this sentiment is so common, but we’ve all gotta update our priors about deliverism after the Biden administration. Because they tried it, on both quality of life issues and sweeping economic policies, and it didn’t work. Sucks but it’s true.
