Today is the translation feast of Saint Olaf. Bishop Grimkell oversaw the opening of the king's casket in 1031, & declared him a saint due to the incorruption of his body & reported miracles. [Courtesy of NIKU (Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research); Birger Landstad]

I am generally not a fan of turning public infrastructure into advertising spaces, but I'm willing to make an exception for this ad on an Oslo bus for the world accordion championship.

Articulated buses are commonly nicknamed "accordion buses" because of the flexible, ribbed bellows connecting the two cabin sections. The bus in the photo features a large graphic of a Roland accordion being played by a giant pair of hands. The two halves of the accordion are on either side of the flexible section, so that it looks like the bellows of the instrument. When the vehicle turns or maneuvers, the real bellows compress and stretch, making it look like the instrument is actively playing. Above the windows is the text "VM på trekkspill, 16.-22. oktober i Asker Kulturhus" ("World accordion championship, 16th-22nd October in Asker cultural centre")

Definitely the case here. In two weeks we find which 9 of 12 in my group will be gone. The other 3 will then have a month to prepare and find hourly-paid replacements for all the classes across two degrees. And supervise 25 PhDs. Plus admin and pastoral care and research. Management doesn’t care.

A #runic find in the Faroes, might be a medieval grave slab. A possible readable sequence on the photo looks like ‘huilir’, i.e. ‘hvílir’ (“rests”). But photos can deceive and are never sufficient in themselves. We can look forward to learning about this inscription from those inspecting the stone.

just got an email from my (former) chair that the university has acted & the state has approved the formal closure of my department. this was done without any faculty input on the decision or the process, & has ended a vibrant, growing (!), humanities department that won teaching and research awards
