Scott Hylands passed away last week on July 29, 2026. Born in 1943 in Lethbridge, he was best known for playing Kevin O'Brien on Night Heat. He had a steady acting career for decades, and appeared on shows such as The Outer Limits, V, Fargo and more.

I've spent decades learning about death, hospice care, and end of life care. I'd like to think I'm more prepared and understand it more than most. Received the news yesterday that my dad is dying. And all I know is that I'm not sure that knowledge is all that helpful.

Only book in this great thread that I've read, but I really enjoyed this one. I found the way it was written was super helpful for my own stuff. And the applications were interesting and have come up in conversation more than a few times over the years. (Will check out some of the others.)

10. ALGORITHMS TO LIVE BY (Brian Christian & Tom Griffiths). this is like a survey textbook of classic CS and maths stuff (optimal stopping, sorting, game theory etc), with many 'apply-to-life' examples. v cool stuff from grad school, and well written, but really not my thing to read for fun

For anyone keeping track at home, since I got access to my new place, a hot water pipe burst at 11 pm last night in the ceiling on the other side of the hall. No water damage for me, but the water alarms went off for about an hour and cleanup went through the night.
