Apparently Transport Minister Dreeshen (yeah, that guy) says "he wants to hear from Albertans if bike lanes are creating traffic congestion, hurting businesses or prolonging emergency response times." That's what he wants to hear, but I have other complaints to register on the new complaint line.

TMX claims to have reached a settlement agreement with 7 out the 8 current firm shippers on its line. It has filed that agreement with the CER for its approval. The agreement, if approved, will set the tolls on the line for the next 15 – 20 years. But here’s the snag. 1/

Perhaps Alberta's auditor general can advise as to the processing costs of granting eligible Albertan's a $100 grant. And why does the means test start at $225,000 !!!! per household? Maximum voter coverage (bribery). Minimal payment. #abpoli #ableg www.alberta.ca/release.cfm?...

Putting energy revenues back in your pocket

Alberta’s government is launching the Alberta Energy Rebate, turning energy revenues into money directly in Albertans’ pockets.

The Alberta Energy Rebate available July 1 is $100 for the 3.4M adult Albertans w/ household incomes under $225,000/yr. Also on July 1, ~50,000 adult Albertans on Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped will be transferred to a program paying max $1740/mth or $20,880/yr, down from $23,280/yr.

Great to see our law dean Laura Spitz @ucalgary.bsky.social on the advisory panel for the #SCC appointment process to replace Justice Sheilah Martin. Some of us knew her as Dean Martin, so this seems like a full circle moment.

The advisory panel for the next #SCC judge selection was announced. It's very late—applications closed almost a month ago, and Justice Martin retires at the end of the month. (After Friday, the Court won't sit until September, but still). Curious that Maureen McTeer is chairing. #cdnlaw

May 19, 2026
Ottawa, Ontario

Today, the Prime Minister, Mark Carney, announced the Chair and members of the Independent Advisory Board for Supreme Court of Canada Judicial Appointments. These individuals will identify candidates to fill the upcoming Supreme Court of Canada vacancy created by the upcoming retirement of Justice Sheilah L. Martin on May 30, 2026.
The Independent Advisory Board includes:
Maureen McTeer (Chair)
Riel Bellegarde
Aimée Craft
Justin E. Kingston
Marie-Pierre Lavoie
The Honourable J. Michael MacDonald
Justin Robichaud, K.C.
Laura Spitz
The members of the Independent Advisory Board were selected for their expertise, integrity, and distinguished service across Canada’s legal, academic, and public institutions. Together, they bring diverse perspectives and experiences – including regional and linguistic representation – that will support a rigorous, transparent, and merit-based process for identifying the most qualified candidates for appointment to the Supreme Court of Canada.
The Independent Advisory Board will review applications received through the Office of the Commissioner for Federal Judicial Affairs to identify candidates who are jurists of the highest calibre, bilingual, and representative of the diversity of our country. They will then submit a shortlist of candidates to the Prime Minister for consideration.
Applications from qualified candidates were accepted until Monday, April 27, 2026. They were open to all qualified applicants from Western Canada and Northern Canada, in recognition of the convention of regional representation.

Today in QP the Premier said she’s protecting teachers from violence in schools by removing the word welcoming. Because that is definitely the problem, not the overcrowded classrooms or lack if supports. They’re too welcoming. #ableg

There is a long philosophical tradition of civil disobedience from many different sources including Thoreau, Ghandi & Peter Singer. Alberta UCP Bill 25 will make it unlawful to teach about social change through the disobedience of laws. #abpoli #cdnpoli
