I'm comfortably walking around Baltimore in the sun, while it's 32C and heat index of 36C... But after a week in Taiwan with heat indices of like 45C every day, it seriously feels nice and dry/cool. Crazy how the body can adjust like that

AR 4479 is turning into a BEAST of an active region with flaring activity ramping up significantly in the last 24 hours with many M-class flares and even a low-level X-class flare. I bet that we will see another significant flare before the region rotates off the Earth-facing disk.
An absolutely fascinating read!! tldr: the hard and important part of math was always building the scaffolding, while proofs (results) were a byproduct to socially capitalize on this work. AI disrupts that, as it produces proofs without re-injecting useful scaffolding into the system!

Springer Nature offloads SciAm—the most storied science magazine in the US—onto a content mill consortium, LabX, during an almost certainly successful union vote. LabX now says it will lay off 15 people, over 1/3rd of the unit and 60% of the bargaining committee. Pure union busting.
