I agree with a lot of his points. Not all of them, particularly how dismissive he is of progressive politics ("all that crazy stuff"... my friend, it's not crazy, it's people crying out for change), but he's absolutely spot-on about the Black vote AND how FAST white people will flip.

In Bari Weiss' Free Press, Olivia Reingold reported from El-Sayed's watch party that "there were keffiyehs as far as the eye could see ... keffiyehs on heads, keffiyehs as belts, keffiyeh-printed phone cases." Not a single one made it into images from Reuters, a local ABC station, or Detroit News.

I say this as someone who had plenty of negative experiences with some of the white-led DSA yearsssss ago. It's changed. The sooner we realize that class is what unites us all. They want us fighting with each other and drawing more divisive line. They want us fighting for crumbs. We do not have to.

Michigan Public and NPR and the BBC are all saying the race is too close to call yet, while everything I see on social media is Abdul and supporters celebrating his victory.

Yet another election where Detroit makes it to the BBC World Service. I don't know what about this region makes it such a political hotspot but here we are.

I've seen several white friends who don't live in Detroit ask how Abdul could have lost Detroit, without a hint of irony as to how they are answering their own question: they take the Black vote for granted. They assume "not white = super progressive!" Detroit is a conservative city y'all

I will say Detroit is really a "two things can be true" kinda town and that's what excites me and infuriates me. you will hear from national (and not local) folks analyzing what happened here but a local can tell you that this is 50+ years of inter-racial relations a play here.

so that an organizer won up against a machine and a shitton of money... that means something has shifted here too. Abdul didn't lose Detroit, per se, rather he went up against a community that rightly so doesn't trust easily and are focused on harm reduction. the work starts all over again, now.

Abdul won, but it was extremely close and he lost the biggest Black city in Michigan. Progressives think they understand "the Black vote" but it's very clear they don't. The progressive movement is picking up steam but they need to do a ton of work to understand the concerns of Black voters.

All some people have is social media. The only time they get to “debate” or converse with other people, is on social media. For some, social media is the only place they hold power. And it’s because I have THIS knowledge that I always think twice before engaging people in arguments on any platform
