It is only very large cities that will not be severely affected by university shrinkage or collapse. A loss of students and universities in mid-sized places like York, Coventry, Exeter, Southampton will change the area fundamentally. In many, universities are the second biggest employer, after NHS.

I have a small contribution to their "Head to Head" segment on "How did the English arrive in Britain", in which I tried in c. 300 words to get across the complexity of the debate and what new evidence developments do and don't tell us.

Without these developments, this book could not have been completed—at least not during my active professional life. My knowledge of Korean is far too limited to read and critically analyze the volume of vernacular academic literature that underlies this study. Without artificial intelligence—especially OpenAI’s ChatGPT (mainly models 4o and 4.5), Google’s Gemini (model 2.0 Flash), and DeepL (version 25)—these texts would have remained inaccessible to me. I used AI primarily to translate thousands of pages of Korean-language articles and books, as well as Chinese sources, into English. This method was adopted only after rigorous evaluation: I consulted native speakers, compared the AI-generated translations with human renditions and the output of other AI models, and back-translated the results to check for semantic integrity and bias. The results were consistently accurate and coherent, giving me confidence in the reliability of the process. Translation has always been a legitimate scientific practice; only now has it become viable on a scale that supports a study of this magnitude.

Really can't cope with the fact that Nottingham's now departed VC (now VC at Leeds - god help them) wasted £80 MILLION on a building it is now selling at a crushing loss (£14m), and is attempting to recoup some of that by sacking 100s of academics and decimating the institution. Absolutely criminal.

I've got to be honest: reading the excellent text by Stefan Collini in the LRB on the state of British Higher Education is leaving me a bit depressed. He is offering some solutions that would address the dilemma the marketisation of universities has placed us in, but this needs political will.

Recently, FamilySearch digitized and uploaded tons of microfilmed records, including many from 18th-century Massachsuetts. They're using some sort of AI to transcribe/summarize the handwritten documents. I've noticed that the AI strips out references to race and enslavement in 18thc documents.
