Anyone who describes their critique style as "brutally honest" doesn't get to critique my work. If I hear how a critique group is so helpful because they rip things to shreds, I'll never bring my work to that group. Helping others grow as writers does not require violence.
Ann Leckie@annleckie.com · 3w agoThere is a huge difference between "You look like crap" and "oh, hey, I see you like eyeliner, you know what would really look cool on you? Have you tried that?" It isn't actually that hard to be honest and rigorous in critique without plunging a knife into someone's writing heart.

We are not currently sending out any presenter invitations, and we never ask a presenter to pay money to present at SiWC.

This is also a vital part of keeping kids safe from sexual predators btw. It is good along multiple vectors. "Of course you're in charge of your body, anyone who says different is weird and wrong" is a powerful thing to normalize for a child.

Someone is complaining their child wants to cut their hair short or grow it long? Point out that it's the child's hair. Why shouldn't they have it how they want it? Why is that parent upset?

My day job is at a rural branch of a public library, and we have a Pride display. Yesterday I was at the desk when a man came in. Fifties, maybe, or sixties. Plaid shirt, mesh trucker cap, suspenders. He went up to the display and just stood there for a long moment. Then he came up to the desk. 🧵 1/

Masks are an extremely cheap & relatively efficient way to prevent all kinds of airborne illnesses getting into your own body. They don't harm surrounding people, they are easy to carry, can't be used in any devious way, yet that MD seems bothered by this completely innocuous things. I miss adults.

HI! Are you coming to Victoria, BC this year? One of MY favourite things to do is just wandering around. This is a 7-8km, around 5-mile, walk through perfectly safe, beautiful urban spots, through one of Canada's most beloved parks, by world-class rugged seashore, back thru the park to your hotel.
Wider human rights limitations are now underway—limiting human rights for immigrants does not just limit their human rights, it limits them for all of us. Most people do not understand this. The price will be theirs—all of ours—to pay. Human rights are universal. Or they are not.
I must say again—because so many do not see this: fascism does not start with concentration camps, that is where it can end. It starts with hollowing out the rule of law; with limiting rights; with denying some of us their existence on the basis of who they are. So that is where must be stopped.

So eighty-odd years ago my grandfather was studying Natural Sciences at Cambridge and, as part of it, had a class where he had to learn how to identify fossils. My grandfather was a) not an observant man and b) from Birmingham. This was not his time to shine. 1/n
