The Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering teams at Wizards of the Coast have just announced they're unionizing. In a letter of demands, the union has urged Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast leaders to stop pushing generative AI. https://bit.ly/4hMhPzG

Not everything needs to be polished into the same familiar shape. We need games that feel like they could only have been made by these people, from this place, carrying this history. We need artists with something strange, specific and deeply human to say. That ai could never.

Remember back in 2018 when RDR2 was coming out and an article revealed the 100 hour week crunch period right before launch, and we all revolted and said never again? I miss the alternate universe where we stood by that and I didn’t hear friends say “at least I only worked 55 hours this week”.

I really REALLY need game devs, and especially those who are in higher up positions, indie or otherwise, to clue into the fact that crunching away for weeks or months of a time is neither normal nor something you should wear as a badge of honour.

Gamescom 2026 Thoughts: - Big studios playing it safe with sequels, remakes, etc - Smaller studios struggling for funding. - Almost zero metaverse, NFT, blockchain, VR/XR - 'Prompt your game/asset' AI tech demos mostly didn't work - Increase in Asia presence: games, IPs, companies, etc

Game engines: - Unreal devs/studios are not happy about news of Blueprints being sunset - Godot massively on the rise with indies - Unity devs using the engine due to familiarity; cautious but hopeful for future of the company - Studios investing in own tech/engines for ownership & control

"Indies will save us" No! YOU WILL SAVE INDIES! Go leave a review for that neat indie game you like, share the trailer for an upcoming game you're anticipating, tell your fave developer they did a good job, go tell people about such and such game that's just come out, you can make a difference!

Hey gamedev friends! I’m going to Gamescom Dev in a few weeks, where I’ll give a talk: Why Is This Not Written Down? About knowledge management and documentation practices at all levels of your dev process, including tips and tricks that I’ve picked up and taught others. Come say hi!
