perhaps the most charming consequence of the printing press in early modern Europe is the rise of broadsheet posters — which could announce news ranging from "enormous fire seen in the heavens" to "Mr. Höfler grew a weird cabbage"

a 1561 broadside poster with a hand-colored illustration of flames descending from the clouds toward a village while people look upwards in amazement. The headline reads "Ein grausamb/ vnd erschröcklich wunderzeychen/ so am 28. tag Decembris im LX. Jar/ zů Eckelßheym ein Meyl wegs von Forchheym geschehen ist" (A horrible and terrifying miracle, which occurred on 28 December 1560, at Eggolsheim, a mile away from Forchheim). The lengthy text below describes a huge flame seen in the sky (presumably the Northern Lights) and uses three biblical references to interpret the event as a warning from God and encourage readers to seek God's mercy. The credited printer is Georg Merckel. It's about 40cm or 16 inches tall. From the Wickiana collection at Zentralbibliothek Züricha 1553 broadside poster with hand-colored illustration of a big cabbage. The headline begins "Ein tröstliches vnd wunderbarliches Gewechs das warhafftig vor augen ist" (a comforting and miraculous growth that is truly before our eyes) and the caption explains that a multi-headed white cabbage was found in Thon (on the northern outskirts of Nuremberg) on Mr. Höfler's farm, which was interpreted as a sign from God for a bountiful year. The credited printer is Steffan Hamer. It's about 40cm or 16 inches tall. From the Wickiana collection at Zentralbibliothek Zürich

Pulled some fabrics for the Star Pop 2 Quilt. Some are yardage, others remnants, yet others kindly gifted (♥️). Star fabric is cream with tiny red lobsters. I think my pull might need some more brown? Some depth? Thoughts?

An array of fabrics

Tonight's dinner is a Scottish/British takeaway on my favourite Danish comfort food: biksemad. I've chopped up cold baked potatoes, an onion, and some chicken sausages we had kicking about. All into a deep frying pan with some thyme, pepper & Worcestershire sauce. And browning it all off .. 1/

What part of my resting bitch face, a laptop, and absolute focus as I type away makes a stranger think he should shuffle up and call me darling? You'd think blue hair, wedding ring, middle-ageness, and pride badge would be sufficient but add the rbf and the laptop .. and I'm at a loss.

Just looked up the health spa where my aunt worked for years. The founder: "Around 1930, Austrian inventor Viktor Schauberger realised that water can change its structures by, amongst other things, being transported through straight pipes."

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

An aircraft passenger oxygen mask: a drop down passenger mask with air bag and yellow plastic mouth and nose cover, oxygen tube has been cut; Demonstration model used by flight attendant crew for passenger instruction. Has text on the side indicating that it's non-functional.

Had this convo offline, so let's put it online too. That trade union organiser from Burnley? Might not be real. That retired nurse from upstate New York? Might not be real. Making you feel negative rather than hopeful is deliberate. Bots and fake accounts are not just aimed at RW, but LW too.

Satyr created by Mary Lorraine, c.1967, in the art therapy studio at Netherne Hospital, where she was compelled to live. One of several surviving works her paintings often depict scenes of ballet, art making & society occasions & it seems, pre-hospitalisation, she may have been a professional dancer

A pale painting of a white, grey haired satyr dressed in a grey v neck sweater, white shirt and black tie with furred legs and pointy hooves, the left hand raised to shoulder height.
The figure is rather stranded in the middle of an expanse of yellowing paper, it is painted in an untaught style and there is something quite camp about the satyr’s stance but there is also a slightly unsettling quality to it.
His face is not very detailed but the expression on it is certainly not friendly

Dave: Happy anniversary. Here's stained glass art inspired by 1920s ballet. And a custom notebook I designed for you! Me: Uhm, here's a Chernobyl-themed stack of presents because it's been 40 years. Dave: .. we've not been together 40 years? Me: .. 🤔 .. you may have a point.
