Yet another goddamn Icelandic writer.

me: oh, I’m not that much of a football obsessive, it’s just a hobby really also me: surely if I refresh the Reuters report about the FIFA crisis meeting in Morocco just one more time this minute there will be news about whether Infantino is quitting

Infantino holds crisis meeting in Morocco as FIFA stake sale fallout continues

me, arriving home: oh… ambulance turning into my street, hopefully the old woman next door is okay oh… the ambulance is stopping behind a fire truck that’s stopped outside my house … … oh (everything turned out fine, an incense stick fell into a flowerpot, which caught fire, it was doused)

such is the speed of corrupt idiocy at fifa, that a satirical piece published four hours ago about the corrupt idiocy at fifa, had become obsolete an hour later when it came out that the corrupt idiots at fifa had decided to put the World Cup up for sale

Who dares ridicule Gianni Infantino as the World Cup boss creates global peace? Not me: is it you? | Marina Hyde

If you thought he was just a shady rule-dodging reprobate, the Fifa boss’s latest 15-page Instagram rant might make you think again, says Guardian columnist Marina Hyde

I realize that whining about Google is getting old, but I was startled to see that these sites were results 4 through 7 (2 of the top 3 were to Wikipedia, one of whom was pertinent) for ‘homer melesigenes’ (the latter being Homer’s birth name in ancient tradition). Avoiding slop was Google‘s point.

Google search page, showing results for ‘homer melesigenes’ linking to GoTürkiye, HistorySnob, HistoricaWiki and Amura Yachts & Lifestyle.

Weird to be doing a bit of historical research and realize that one of the people involved is a close friend, and most of the other people are either friends of friends or people I vaguely know peripherally. Somehow I didn’t think this was going to be a feature of my life when I was 45.

I find it fascinating how books can come in and out of fashion. A quarter-century ago “The Education of Henry Adams” was anointed as the greatest English-language non-fiction book of the 20th Century. Today I wonder if it would even make the top hundred. I doubt half of the top ten would, actually.

The following table shows the top ten books from the editors' list:[2]

1	1918 The Education of Henry Adams	Henry Brooks Adams
2	1902	The Varieties of Religious Experience	William James
3	1901 Up from Slavery	Booker T. Washington
4	1929	A Room of One's Own	Virginia Woolf
5	1962	Silent Spring	Rachel Carson
6	1932	Selected Essays, 1917–1932	T. S. Eliot
7	1968	The Double Helix	James D. Watson
8	1951 Speak, Memory	Vladimir Nabokov
9	1919 The American Language	H. L. Mencken
10	1936	The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money	John Maynard Keynes

Til hamingju með daginn elsku druslur!! 🙌❤️‍🔥 Það er stundum óþolandi að hugsa til þess að við skulum ennþá búa í samfélagi þar sem kynferðis- og kynbundið ofbeldi er ennþá allt of algengt og normalíserað, þrátt fyrir alla þá vinnu sem konur, hinsegin og kynlífsverkafólk hefur unnið í gegnum aldirnar 😮‍💨

What’s your most embarrassing moment as a writer? Mine was meeting David Sedaris’ husband, Hugh, and telling him: “Oh my God! My friends will never believe I met you! This is awkward. I’m not normally this awkward.“ I then added: “I hope the Earth opens up and swallows me now”. His laugh was kind.

All you have to do is embarrass the hell out of yourself and then call yourself a writer. It's so easy

I saw a boy, maybe 12 years old, wearing a T-shirt with Richard Belzer’s face and the name “John Munch”. I’m trying to think what the equivalent would’ve been when I was 12 in 1993. Maybe a kid in a M*A*S*H or a Bonanza shirt.
