If roughing up a girlfriend and locking her in a room was a virile, authentic a rejection of “smoothgroined” “HR lady” politics, but a rape is too far, then what’s at stake is not a principled rejection of violence against women but a cynical assessment of how much violence a man can get away with.

I was R1 for a paper at some journal. R2 was an A-hole. They told the (British) authors to native-English edit their flawless text, berated them for citing preprints, tried to coerce citations. True R2 bingo. We should normalize refusing to review for outlets where such BS behavior is allowed.

The original authors have published a reply to our comment (www.econstor.eu/bitstream/10...). They applaud us for checking the robustness of social science research, yet at the same time accuse us of acting as the “replication police.” Here is how we see the story in a nutshell:

Fuck the reflecting pool. This has not gotten nearly enough coverage or generated the proper outrage. People thrown in prison for 30-50 years for the "crime" ofmaking zines and belonging to a book club!! This is straight-up totalitarian atrocity. Political prisoners thrown in a gulag to rot.

ArXiv will quarantine you for a year if you submit AI slop, and somehow people are freaking out about having to check that their citations aren’t made up. Now call me old fashioned, but isn‘t reading what you cite and meticulously copyediting your whole manuscript part of the job description?

My benign take is that (1) you’re not responsible for checking all of your coauthor’s citations but also (2) the new arXiv policy is totally reasonable because there should be consequences for fake citations and there’s no practical way to adjudicate multi-author cases.

The fundamental asymmetry in scientific publishing today is that people can submit absolutely mind boggling crap, and face zero real costs. Unless these kinds of things are tied to substantial costs/risks, and while we rely on volunteer labor, nothing will get better.

I have lots of thoughts about this. But what I really want to know, because I'm not one: Are preprint moderators ok with their sites being used in this way? Y'all ok with folks uploading fake papers?

Although AI improves performance during assisted sessions, performance drops sharply once it's removed. And relative to controls, AI-assisted participants also gave up more frequently on test problems.

Why does this happen? Two candidate mechanisms: 1) AI resets your reference point for how long things "should" take. Unaided work suddenly feels harder than it actually is, -- a kind of hedonic adaptation. 2) AI removes the productive struggle through which you learn what you're capable of.
