Following up on an incidental very cool finding from 2017 (!) that I didn't have the time/$/resources to pursue at the time and just repeated the finding this week almost 10yrs later. Different cell source in a different lab/city - reproducibility win!

Fellow Associate Editors, the answer to the peer review crisis is NOT to assign the manuscript to someone without them agreeing to review it, even if it is for a 2nd review. This is extra bad if your publication fees are $12850USD and you're expecting more uncompensated peer review labor.
Thankful for UPF clothing and Canadian 🇨🇦 approval of Mexoryl !
Here's to hoping this is truly the last RD exam I have to take! 🇨🇦
Congratulations to @kcklatt.bsky.social for receiving the ASN Sylvia Rowe Award for Excellence in Nutrition Science Communications, recognizing mid-career professionals who excel at communicating nutrition science to diverse audiences and promoting evidence-based dialogue.
My take on UPFs continues to be: - there is a need for understanding attributes of foods that influence health beyond classical nutrients, creating metrics around them, and incorporating them into dietary guidance, labeling and regulations.
It is hardly news that the noisy correlation-based data on ultra-processed foods is very low-quality, but it turns out that the UPF randomized controlled trials probably don't offer strong evidence of the harms of "ultra-processing," either. Gift link: www.vox.com/future-perfe...

Wild to see this celebrated as a win. Basically putting experimental sciences in humans back 25yrs - on the same platform as p-hacked and HARKd preclinical models, but worse given how hard it is to repeat human studies. Huge loss @naturemetabolism.bsky.social www.nature.com/articles/s42...

NEW: In February, I visited Raw Farm. You may have heard of it. RFK Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow are customers. It supplies raw dairy products to 500 stores nationwide. And regulators have linked it to over a dozen recalls and outbreaks that have made hundreds sick. 🧵👇

For no particular reason, I'll be starting a side consultant PR firm for professional societies struggling to navigate bending the knee to a federal administration actively attacking everything they purportedly stand and serving their members.
Reflecting on #ADA26 and the growing options for very successfully treating obesity & reducing intake dramatically, yet there continues to be a lack of data assessing dietary intake & nutr status, as well as the lack of referrals to & funding for RDs - & no one who's going to pay to fill these gaps.
At the #ADASciSessions, it is clear that injecting politics into science has proven to be a terrible distraction. conscienhealth.org/2026/06/07/a...

Remember when people used to debate about low carb vs low fat 😂
Attending #ADA26 is a sad reminder that nutrition has been chronically underfunded, with limited federal support and both limited & largely unserious industry support. The breadth and quality of data here, largely driven by commercial incentives, puts the field of nutrition to shame.
Sad events here at #ADA26 - ADA has chosen the side of this administration - pretending it's unsafe to an invited federal speaker to hand out an editorial - over supporting its own leadership who've dedicated countless volunteer hours to the org's right to protest. www.nytimes.com/2026/06/05/w...

See lots of pushback on critics of the NOVA categorization for UPFs saying essentially that its nit-picky to call out that FFQs don't have ingredients lists and can't reliably distinguish NOVA 3 vs 4. This is a huge issue for not only mechanisms but also ensuring industry reformulates meaningfully
I know I shouldn't be surprised but people really are submitting entirely AI written narrative reviews to publications and wasting everyone involved's time. IDK what the solution to scientific publishing is but the incentives are so out of whack.

Inborn errors of redox metabolism: an emerging nosology
Inborn errors of redox metabolism (IERM) are a growing yet poorly defined group of disorders, limiting understanding and treatment. We propose a dichotomous classification: primary IERM, involving genetic defects in redox pathways, and secondary IERM, where reactive oxygen species-mediated damage arises from other metabolic defects. This framework aims to guide future research.

In the era of MAHA, I really worry abt what the next generation of science/clinical trainees are going to think about health. Everyone is impacted by cultural norms and we are entering a world where it has become normative that all modern exposures are suspect & bias drives what is healthy/unhealthy
Babies were found with dead brain tissue similar to what follows cancer and the kind of bleeding seen after a stroke. Their autopsies all came to the same conclusion: Their deaths could have been prevented with a long-standard vitamin shot. By @deldeib.bsky.social
