“more than 70 women…[are] shot &killed *every month* in the US due to domestic violence. & we find that DV shootings often overlap w/other types of shootings…a history of DV is a big predictor for committing a mass shooting. & we also find that DV & suicide…often overlap”🧪🛟 @meganranney.bsky.social

NIH went from 756 funding announcements (NOFO) in 2024 to 120 in 2025 to just 14 so far this year. Reports this collapse due to number of policy changes including requiring every NOFO be approved by political appointees and now also by the Office of Management and Budget. The full impact is vast

On top of the slowdown in grantmaking I wrote about last week - this is another deeply worrisome trend for scientists, physicians, patients, families, and basically anyone who wants new treatments and new tools to promote health. 🆘🧪🥼 open.substack.com/pub/elizabet...

The attack on science research by the Trump Regime is going to have reverberations that will echo long into the future. China was already pulling ahead in many areas of science and technology, but this self-inflicted injury to American scientific research will accelerate that trend.

A total collapse. The National Institutes of Health went from 756 funding announcements published to 14 in two years. One example of the effects: emerging threats will become harder to address quickly. Response to future health emergencies (like Covid) will be slower and less coordinated.

A change in NIH policy change requires poltical review for the announcement of finding notifications, resulting in greater political control over research and reducing the ability for biomedical research to respond to emerging and understudied problems.

Absolutely astonishing. I don't think many people realize the extent to which the scientific enterprise in America has collapsed over the past 14 months. As someone who covered science funding for the first half of his career, it's almost unfathomable this could happen.

I Wrote Research Funding Announcements for NIH for 22 Years. This Year They’ve Published 14

How NIH went from 756 funding announcements to 14 in two years — and what it means for every disease that depends on federal research

"The $7.3 billion National Cancer Institute (NCI), NIH’s largest institute, is also feeling the effects. At a recent public meeting, Deputy Director Doug Lowy noted the NOFO approval process now requires 16 steps. He joked that it’s now more complex than a 1929 Rube Goldberg design for a can opener"

The quiet part being illuminated: there have been very few new awards from NIH this fiscal year, for some very specific reasons 🆘 www.science.org/content/arti...

The Federal Parent Locator Service contains sensitive details about individual children, and it’s meant for finding people who owe child support. Granting access to DHS would violate a federal law that explicitly limits its use, officials said.
