The Truths We Hold My teacher once told me, that the truth was legible, written in declarations, engraved in constitutions, spoken beneath flags that dance freely in the wind. In kakuma refugee camp, I learned the truth from mothers who divide one meal into many hopes, from fathers whose tired hands build a tomorrow from almost nothing. At night when the generators die and darkness becomes honest, the camp does not sleep. It whispers, with thousands of unbreakable murmurs. We hold the truth, that freedom begins in imagination, long before it arrives in law. The truth we hold are whispers in our wind, and in the night where faces are lit like enemies of fire.
