The Richard Dadd exhibition at the RA is a revelation — wonderful to see The Fairy-Feller’s Master-Stroke up close in all its curious detail, but there’s much more to enjoy. I loved The Artist's Halt in the Desert and Reminiscence of Venice, and Dadd’s own writings from Bedlam and Broadmoor.

Me to the woman in a Spanish patisserie when trying to find something dairy-free for my daughter, fumbling around for the word for butter, remembering the French ‘beurre’ and then that there’s a similar-sounding Spanish word: “No burro, por favor?” No wonder she gave me a funny look.

Me and my beloved Uncle Brian, c.1985. He sent me this pic a few years ago, explaining that it brought back fond memories of the day he first taught me how to light a crack pipe. Brian Case, 17.8.1937-13.7.2026. One of the UK's greatest writers on jazz and the funniest man I've ever known.
He covered the waterfront in popular culture, knew so much and wrote so smartly. The Hip still on a front room shelf here. I think of him when I hear Chet Baker and remember his writing about Mr Chet. So sad for you and the family.

This afternoon I interviewed Robert Elms about this book inside the SS Robin, an iron-hulled steamship moored in Trinity Buoy Wharf, London E14. I am judging the event a huge success on the basis that no participants or audience members died of heatstroke.

A lot of gentiles tell Jews who are concerned about antisemitism that we're shutting down criticism of Israel by crying antisemitism. Most of the time, it's more that we're asking you to take a breath and *learn* how antisemitism manifests before you speak so that you don't fall into it when you do.
