Dryer sheets are also why towels become less absorbent over time and lint builds up on everything you dry with them. Dryer sheets are literally disposable trash that do nothing to help your laundry. Get reusable, natural wool dryer balls instead.

The chemistry in fabric softener sheets is designed to stick to complex surfaces and coat them. After a while it builds up — forming a thin waxy film on your clothes, natch, but also on the dryer's lint filter, making it less efficient every time it's exposed. From the article cited above:
