Enjoyed my reread of @byzantienne.bsky.social 's Teixcalaan duology so much that I'm now halfway through her remarkably lucid and engaging dissertation. Starting to compose a blog post exploring some of the connections, though I won't write anything unless I can come up with something interesting...

i think it’s good to scan books for any reason and if you’re mad that copyright law encourages the book to be destroyed afterwards you should be mad at copyright law
ok here’s the thing about evil centaur robot with a chainsaw: I love evil centaur robot with a chainsaw
A thread on special editions, luxury books, and publishing history: In 1903, J. M. Dent created Everyman’s Library, intended as a cheap line of hardbacks to make a classical education accessible as mass literacy rates were on the rise.
If you’re upset about the book shredding stuff, which I get, you should read Vernor Vinge’s RAINBOWS END, which I think is only becoming more and more relevant as time goes by.
This is none of our business. This is ant-to-ant business.
The face of an ant under an electron microscope. Fascinating.
the ideal academic life is being an eccentric Victorian lord. Invent a stamp licking machine at 22. Get elected to the Royal Academy for counting the beetles on your estate. Die in an arsenic explosion. The perfect life.
larger implications aside it’s always funny when an LRB piece breaks containment because it’s like a crowd shows up with machetes on your porch and you are. an old Man whittling whistles or making cups out of willow bark
writing is just whispering 'don't lose your nerve' to yourself over and over and over again
A translator is forced to confront whether or not she has become an unwitting collaborator with the people who have invaded her home when she translates important religious texts...perhaps too well. Next week. "Into Your Sun-Blessed Life" by @visyap.bsky.social!

I have a new story out on Reactor today, my first since my collection came out in 2021. It's about a teenage poet, friend breakups, and wrestling with inherited faith. There are spaceships that are massive libraries. It would make me very happy if you read and shared it! 😊

most of my stuff is up on wzrdz.cool, which is a _pretty good_ url, but I'm thinking of changing my atproto handle and looking at some of the other wzrdz out there. contenders: wzrdz.world wzrdz.xyz wzrdz.ink wzrdz.club wzrdz.dz is, unfortunately, Algerian only.

The kids are nixonmaxxing. They’re saying they’re not a crook. They’re breaking into the watergate building. They’re going bald in mysterious and confusing ways.
The kids are “Nixonmaxxing”: More than half-a-century after Watergate, conservative youth are discovering the aesthetic, and adopting the attitude, of the late president. 🔗 www.wsj.com/politics/ric...
the best day for the presidents of every R1 to hold a press conference screaming that higher ed is our second largest export and destroying it is economic sabotage and soft power detonation was Jan 21st 2025. the next best day is tomorrow.
a bad thing is running a phd program with brilliant international students who must reckon with a volatile xenophobic saboteur government in fresh ways every day, no thank you, 0/10
It won’t stop at math. Machines getting better at thinking through abstract problems than we are is going to be an emotional crisis for lots of people. I wish we were engaging that directly instead of having ridiculous shadow-debates about GPUs’ inherent thirst for water.
Very worried about this sort of thing hitting more broadly:
Apropos of a conversation elsewhere on Bluesky, here's a brief experiment with Fable and Marianne Moore. Fable has gotten quite good at emulating the stylistic and formal elements of particular poets.

Fucccck they got him with the Gun That Makes You Italian
Just now finished @aptshadow.bsky.social 's latest, GREEN CITY WARS, a charming Raymond Chandler riff starring a riffraff raccoon gumshoe. Another genuine pleasure to read. The high SFF stuff is great, of course, but AT's just as good when he's doing genre pastiche imo (e.g. Guns of the Dawn).
A little bit of AI joy, I hope. It started as a simple way to help my daughter get a grip on Dracula and David Copperfield... and in a week it's turned into an agentic system that can parse a text, plot it and direct the story on a map. peter-guillam123.github.io/plotlines/
PlotLines — the classics, mapped
Every journey in the book, played out on a genuine period map — out-of-copyright novels and plays, followed stop by stop from Frankenstein to Shakespeare.

with alt text cuz this deserves it. “misleading” is my fav kind of promo. I wish we did more of it. It makes me laugh to think how people would take promo like this today, I think it would make some heads explode and that’s really funny to me.
This promotional PSYCHO pre-release marketing photo (designed to satisfy demand and mislead from the film’s actual plot) always makes me smile.
Current platforms are trying to be the only place you hangout. In the real world, we call that a trap. Bluesky is a distribution engine — we send people to off platform experiences. Go read that blog on @beehiiv.com or watch the livestream on @stream.place.
So basically I am destined to burn alive in the family manse. Yeah there was a vision about it
