In case you missed it: last week White House Office of Science and Technology Policy director Michael Kratsios issued a big new report on the future of American science. Cole Donovan says it is cover for reallocating funding to the administration's friends—the big AI firms and hyperscalers.

I see a lot of arguments that "if country X cuts back on science, country Y wins." Wins what, a greater proportion of fewer discoveries? This "defense" of science just encourages more barriers to collaboration, it doesn't magically restore funding in country X. As we see empirically. 2/2

Translation: we'd like to be sure we have the authority to reward our political allies in red states, sidestep universities, and make sure women and minorities are excluded as much as possible. 🧪
