News Producer for CTV Montreal. Motorcycle rider. Chef. Racists and sexists and misogynists are pathetic. They are blunt declarations that the belief-holder cannot compete on an even playing field.

From the “why even try?“ school of thought. They keep talking about this like going back to the old status quo with America is an option. Since it isn’t, it means they really want Canada to surrender.

"The idea that surveillance makes us safer keeps being used as an excuse," EFF’s Rindala Alajaji told BBC, as tech is "used to criminalise people for being bystanders, with stories of innocent people being pulled over and having guns drawn on them because a licence plate reader read a letter wrong.”

I went looking for surveillance cameras in my neighbourhood: I found so many more than I thought

In the trade-off between privacy and security, it helps to know the extent of your local surveillance infrastructure. There are now easy ways to find out.

This part is EXTREMELY clear to anyone using their search function. I can put in the literal word-for-word description of a thing I bought before and it won't bring it up in the first two pages of the search. Their search function has become completely useless to me.

Amazon's payola isn't about radio play - it's about *search*. When you search Amazon, the top results do not represent Amazon's best guess about what product will best match your query: rather, Amazon *auctions off* those top results to its platform sellers. 22/

Google has outlined how it’s handling Donald Trump’s latest tantrum. In the US, it will display “Lake America.” In Canada, it will show “Lake Ontario.” In the rest of the world, it will make it seem like a debate: “Lake Ontario (Lake America).” More reason to replace Google Maps.

Google will show Lake America in the US, Lake Ontario in Canada, and Lake Ontario with Lake America in brackets in the rest of the world.

Google has now renamed Lake Ontario for US users. They don’t even show the real name in brackets. I used a VPN to compare: Apple hasn’t renamed it (at least not yet), nor has Dutch service Here WeGo or OpenStreetMap. Yet another reason to ditch Google, and US tech more broadly.

I do think about WFH in this, and how there’s a lot of people whose office life is their entire social life but can’t admit that to themselves or others. Not sure what to do about it either.

Burned alive in a Tesla victim .. 175 (Reminder: the $1800 Ford Pinto went out of production for 27 fire victims in 3.2 million cars. As "Most fire hazardous car in automotive history" half a century ago) Tesla now has 175, in 10 million produced .. h/t @teslaqasia.bsky.social

which gets to this main ideological concern: to spread the message that your sickness or your illness is primarily your fault, and if you ate the right, "pure" food, then you would not to be susceptible to illness.

The fact that Americans still have no idea whether Mitch McConnell is alive or dead is a searing Indictment of the state of American journalism. Back in the day, had this been a Canadian politician, that hospital would have been crawling with Toronto Star reporters disguised as nurses and orderlies.
