Not expecting many kids but I'm set up just in case....Happy Halloween!
How do resource booms shape economic mobility? Who bears the costs of job loss? Why are some occupations harder on new mothers than others? Our recently graduated MA Fellows took on these questions in a new series of research papers. ➡️ Read more online: stonecentre.economics.ubc.ca/research/ma-...
For this 'permanent daylight time' thing I did not anticipate what a huge mess it is making of my calendar. I anticipated hating the 9am sunrises, but honestly this calendar problem is pretty aggravating; 10x more aggravating than the time change that for whatever reason bothers other people.
I got maybe 5 of these last year. Maybe 50 so far this year. VSE does all admissions centrally by the graduate program and undergraduate program. Individual professors don't control admissions. Sending AI flattery slop to me does not help you.
I hate this time of year Dear esteemed professor, I read with great interest your research on [insert phrases from your website]. I am very interested in pursuing a PhD with you. My MA is in [not economics, policy, or remotely adjacent like restaurant management]. Please accept me in your program.
Ok, having to update all the recurring appointments/meetings/block-offs in my Outlook calendar may be worse than having to change the clocks....

Hmmm. If a full repeal of all the extra-CUSMA tariffs was on the table, should we take it? (I doubt that's on the table, so this is mostly hypothetical...)

Hmm. I was reliably informed by economists of the highest pedigree that we, as the small country, had zero hope of having any tariffs reversed and should just sit down to 'make a deal'. Another "L" for Team Captitulation.
These dumbasses only put the tariffs on in August.
"A system where humans volunteer time to engage with AI products is not going to last." That's where I am. I keep getting sent papers/policy proposals that are clearly AI-written and people want feedback and comment from me. So, they want me to donate my scarce time to validate their AI slop. Nope.
It's annoying to be a reviewer, and suspect you are reading something an AI author has written, or to be an author and suspect you are reading what an AI reviewer has written. A system where humans volunteer time to engage with AI products is not going to last.

I woke up early this morning — though perhaps not as early as Bob Hall & Mike Woodford—so that I could explain to the historical context of their Nobel, the work that won the prize, their contributions to the world, and who they are. www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpT6... (fixed link)

Geez I thought I was rough on the BC Conservatives deficit-blowing tax cut promise today. Then I saw my colleague David Duff's comments! On reflection, I think David is correct. vancouversun.com/news/bc-cons...
I swear I've never seen worse graphics than during the DS games. The scoring bug takes forever to update, and has often put up the wrong pitcher. Here is Max Fried with Schlittler's stats. Are they letting AI run the graphics or something like that? Boo. I miss Sportsnet's production!
lol at Canadian political parties trying to do Mamdani things except they're missing the key ingredient to doing Mamdani things which is Mamdani.
Jase Bowen. A+ faces. Too bad he didn't come up with it!
