Started writing a thing on how advent of code puzzles could be reimagined as group-learning activities for the teaching and learning of DSA. And then somehow, accidentally crystallised my entire teaching philosophy... Well they do say writing is thinking.

Four baselines for academic conference attendance: 1) keep to your allocated speaking time. 2) everyone is clever; stand out by being warm & kind. 3) be interested in everyone equally - from postgrad to Prof to conference administrator to catering & hotel staff. 4) in Q&A, ask an actual question.

I've completed "I Was Told There Would Be No Math" - Day 2 - Advent of Code 2015 #AdventOfCode adventofcode.com/2015/day/2 Well - this one was embarrassingly hard and apparently I've purged an awful lot of basic GCSE maths. Or it was a serious case of RTFQ-itis.

Hah yes. We got to do some of that as a proper experiment with flame colours and that. I have always said chemists come in some combo of 4 flavours: 1) Pyromaniacs. 2) Pretty colours/crystals. 3) Interesting pharmaceuticals. 4) Mathmo weirds. I remember uni chem tutors sharing their youth tales.

If you're a cis person and you want to help, here's my advice: 1. Write to your MP and express your concerns about the EHRCs code of practice. Importantly, do your best to write your letter/email personally. MPs received many form letters, and personal ones are more likely to be noticed.

It's Nonbinary Awareness Day and what this nonbinary person would like is for cis people to stop treating nonbinary like a third gender. We are not the halfway point between man and woman. We do not owe anyone androgyny.
