If you’re disabled and relying on someone who’s abusive for literal survival, please know you’re not alone. The lack of social supports and safety nets mean many of us get trapped in exceedingly dangerous situations. Forced to choose between help with food and meds or abuse.

We are here to affirm that you DO belong in STEM! This is a safe space for people with disabilities in STEM to connect. Contact: disabledinstem@gmail.com
You can become disabled or homeless in an instant. It just takes one accident or illness to change your life forever. It’s not a moral failing. You can’t just “try harder”. People need support, compassion and to have their basic needs met. That’s how you ensure survival.

As we recall the trauma caused by COVID in 2020, we should not forget COVID continues to harm. Many still suffer from Long COVID, people who mask are often harassed, and we haven’t scaled clean air infrastructure. If we truly acknowledge past harms, we should be working to create a better future.
"oh everything is misogyny/ableism/racism to you," folks, fellas, lads, I have news for you
Well here's a crisis we can almost all do something about, so that's a silver lining
"On Monday, the Red Cross declared a national blood crisis for the second time ever in its history."
Disability Pride Month felt quieter this year. A few years ago, organizations regularly reached out to highlight disabled scientists and talk about accessibility in STEM. This year, many of those conversations seemed to disappear. But disabled scientists and accessibility barriers didn't disappear.

look, I know that walks are good for my mental health blah blah blah, but how do I stop my mind from throwing every anxiety spiral thought about illness, grief, loss, death, pain, taxes at me while Im walking? Its like walking clears out the extant mess in my mind but it just fills up with anxiety.
If you, like me, just had a bunch of rain and your AQI didn’t go down as much as you maybe thought it would: AQI isn’t just particles, it is also a few gases. Rain is really good at removing particles, gases less so. Also if your rain came with lightning, it could’ve made more of the gases!
When I explain to peeps how much we do in research labs for how few $$, they simply don’t believe me. I once explained it to a famous person from Pixar, he looked me square in the eye and said “You mean all the cancer, vision, and Alzheimer’s grants work that way? You’ve gotta be %#ing kidding me!”
The NIH is an ENORMOUS bargain for the American people. Do folk think that private industry will do the background slog work for drug discovery for 250K direct costs?
Recovery may have slowed me down, but it hasn't stopped me! Proud to have completed the ReclaimingSTEM Institute's seminar series during recovery. Grateful for the chance to keep learning, exploring career paths, and reminding myself that progress doesn't always happen on the timeline we expect.
This is something I and others have been warning about for awhile and it is great though scary too to have more visible coverage of the reality that individuals with accommodations are unfortunately being put at risk by overily broad bans on technology in classrooms #disabilitySKY #disabledinSTEM
Some students with disabilities rely on assistive technology to learn, and they worry it could be swept up in the movement to get screens out of schools.

My daughter was recently diagnosed with Alpha-Gal Syndrome from a tick bite. Why am I announcing this? Because, unlike Lyme Disease, where a tick needs to be attached for ~24 hours before transmission, AGS only needs a tick to attach (think 15 mins). Be safe out there. www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes...

A new paper suggests that grant terminations from the NIH over the past year may have further punctured the so-called "leaky pipeline" because women were more impacted by grant terminations than men www.statnews.com/2026/03/23/n...
NIH grant terminations affected women scientists more than men, study finds
A new paper shows that women, particularly those early in their careers, have been disproportionately affected by NIH grant terminations

Whenever I hear about the leaky pipeline, I recall an interview I saw when I was an undergrad with a woman in STEM who said "I'm all for getting more women into the pipeline but people don't realize that the pipeline is full of acid." NIH and other grant terminations exacerbate this situation.

A children's hospital is renamed for Dolly Parton and hopes to transform pediatric care in Tennessee
Dolly Parton’s name might inspire full-throated sing-a-longs to her working woman’s anthem “9 to 5,” or evoke memories of thrilling days spent at her Dollywood theme park.

White noise in an analytical core lab #NMR - how much is acceptable? I’m moving 2 NMRs, and the new space has noisy pipes and ducts in it. My phone app dB meter shows “inside of a car” levels w/o even any equipment in it. I worry about distraction and spectrum noise. 1/ #NMRChat #DisabledInSTEM
In genetics: 'Trans-acting' = a gene exerts influence on another gene on a different chromosome. 'Expression' = when a gene produces an effect in the cell They tagged two of the most common terms in genetic research for defunding because we put fascist tech-bros in charge of our science. 😠
Duke appears to have lost NIH grants because they used the prefix "trans" in reference to disease transmission, transgenic genetic material, translational studies, or signal transduction www.dukechronicle.com/article/2025...
