I used to be so excited about working in a dev team surrounded by smart humans to learn from. But now I don't know who is real or who is not because everyone feeds our conversations to an AI and parrots back what it says. And no one seems to care about that, and make you feel out of place if you do.

Lesson learned too late in my career: don't join companies without transparent salary bands, clear guidelines on performance reviews, and career ladder. Nothing kills your drive more than knowing you are making 20% less than your peers at same level because you didn't haggle your entry salary.
This whole thing with the LLM "creating a browser" is that we are back at number of LOC as metric of quality like the 80s, and the pundits are saying at the same time it is "surprising usable" in their posts, but then in the replies (less views) say it "couldn't render a single page".

Exhibit #1 on why AI can't really replace a seasoned developer: every time it needs to compare strings for authentication it fails to do it in constant-time to avoid timing attacks. I always have to correct it.
Hacker News and open-source: "I wish I was paid for my open source work, I deserve it" TailwindLabs trying to make a business on top of open source: "Laid off workers? Serves them right for trying to make money on open source" Someone explain this to me like I'm stupid.
I don't think this notification works the way the people behind it wanted, at least for me if I have one of the most viewed profiles without being verified, what is the incentive in getting verified? 🤔
we don't need to get involved in the "our agent has the best tricks" game we'll just wait - most ideas that seem good are not very good and any that are we'll add a month later - ty for doing the work nerds
Someone should probably inform the White House's "AI & Crypto Czar" that no one is forcing AI companies to train their models on Wikipedia
So many technology companies that people revere seem to either be ran by bullies, pedophiles, anarcho-capitalists with fascist tendencies, or straight up genocide enablers. We were supposed to be better than that, and our work was to make the world a better place right? 🤷♂️ Guess money always wins.
We have a choice to fight back against companies who seem to be led by people deprived of moral and ethical values. We have a choice other than being complacent with their attitude and leadership. We can & must to better!
We all have a choice. The Internet is ours.
Hi Internet! I'm Drew and THIS IS MY FACE. If this GIF has ever brought you joy in the past, I humbly ask you to consider making a donation to the National MS Society. It would mean a lot to me and to those I know affected by the disease! Donate at blinkingguy.com
How about instead of focusing on an egotistical CEO's blog, you direct that energy to go upvote @joemasilotti.com's post in Hacker News about his awesome new book on Hotwire Native instead? More eyes = more sales = more time he can focus on teaching us how to build cool stuff. 🙌
Ruby friends, I know times are confusing, but trust me: being chronically online reacting to every random comment doesn't do you any good. Some of you really need to go touch some grass, pet a dog, plan your Halloween decorations, or something else that is far away from the computer. It'll help. 🖤
This is fantastic news! I love how it doesn't matter if it feels the world is turning to shit, we still have so many awesome humans dedicating their lives to help others. ❤️ www.bbc.com/news/article...

I really liked this blog post: thomasorus.com/i-tried-codi... by @thomasorus.com. I feel the same way: by giving control to the AI or relying too much on it I lose the sense of joy I get with coding and it just makes me feel useless. I still use it daily, but mostly as a StackOverflow alternative.
I tried coding with AI, I became lazy and stupid
Robots won't replace me, but another human probably will.

You know, nothing screams "DHH is not racist" more than having MAGA and Tim Pool fans defending him by invoking semantics and trying to pretend he didn't mean that UK "natives" are only the "White British" as per Wikipedia's page on Ethnic groups in London stats for the years he mentioned. 🤷♂️
Last week I went to @euruko.org in Viana and I left with my heart full having seen firsthand that "Matz is nice and so we're nice" is alive and well. I am so happy I found Ruby 10 years ago and discovered the joy of programming which completely changed my life. ✌️ See you in Brno next year! 🇨🇿
I joined the 10k steps a day in September for the Irish Heart Foundation (donate if you can! ❤️) and oh boy, I didn't account for how long it takes to walk close to 8km a day. And with @euruko.org I have close to 24km to catch up in a week 🥲 fundraise.irishheart.ie/fundraisers/...

How to keep track of the many wildfires that Europe is battling this year? These public and free-to-use sources provide insight into fire activity and the damage left behind...
part of my resentment towards LLMs is to do with them crowding out anything else we could be talking about. there are so many things I could be reading to get better at my craft but I'm presented with "you should actually get worse at it on purpose because nothing matters any more"
It's kinda sad seeing how so many creators are trying to squeeze the hype train of AI as much as they can, screw ethics. Posting fake MRR numbers for apps that already shut down and presenting them as viable apps to build, then deleting comments when people show the numbers are fake. Be better. 🫠
Working with computers is exhausting. In gamedev you see teams pretending they are actually just one person and it being used as an excuse to fire people. And in webdev being told AI is going to replace everyone soon™️ but you don't see anything new being created with this "awesome productivity".
Apparently I grind my teeth also when I'm working, not just when asleep, so now every time I put on my mouth guard to work (code) I always remember this amazing scene from Johnny Mnemonic.

Whatever you feel about AI one thing is clear, how unimaginative "tech" really is. Just saw a "viral" video for 5 AI ideas with 200k+ views where the ideas were: - AI powered dating app - Two niche landing page creators - A health dashboard - Directory company with a GPT layer Booooring 😪

I'm an atheist but regardless of beliefs, it's really sad losing Pope Francisco. Especially at a time where we needed his reconciling voice, his empathy, and his compassion so much.
The YouTube to Steam pipeline works. My 6yo kid saw his favourite YouTuber playing a game he liked so used all his "tooth fairy money" to buy it on Steam. So proud of this moment, the first game he bought with his own money. 🥹
