Started a new story tonight! Middle grade first person past tense sci-fi kids-on-bikes story set in space. 1,038 words so far! It’s good to be doing some sci-fi again.

So many options, since my book is about a water dragon and his human protector, living on the coast, making deals with water spirits, following streams uphill into the forest, on a quest to cast the dragon back into the freshwater lake from whence he was hatched. Here’s an early line. #WIPSnips

And then, late one night, a tiny, just-hatched ==water== dragon suddenly and unexpectedly fell out of the sky near a little chicken coop with a loud splash, and then crawled inside to hide.

I have almost exclusively written fairly hard sci-fi for adults (not much romance; plenty of swears), but I’m currently writing a middle grade fantasy specifically to have something to share with my own children and my students at work (younger than YA; power of friendship; no swears). #JuneJottings

Stay Writing While the Sun is Shining! “Borrowing” an idea I saw recently: tease your story with five emojis. Mine would be 👩‍🌾💧🐉🥾🌳 Remember to use alt text, be curious, be kind, and use Oxford commas. #SummerSnips

Oh, that’s not good. Can’t run a consumer economy when people can’t even afford to consume. We get one trillionaire, and already the wheels are about to come off the whole thing. Furthermore, I think that Loblaws must be nationalized.

I’m going from the wild discovery writing draft stage of unconnected “fun bits” to a more methodical and continuous rewrite, and writing the lead up to the start of the big adventure is very vegetables-before-dessert. There’s important character, stakes, and plot stuff I need to have. #JuneJottings

No finales, but I found a good “finally”. Ela is new to magic, and she just doesn’t know the rules that all the actually magical creatures do. #WIPSnips

“You’re not supposed to use my name,” Hawthorn angrily whispered at Ela. “You said it, and then he said it. If you say it one more time, then the spell will be broken, and then I won't be you anymore! Three times, no more and no less! If you—or anyone else—says my name just one more time, then all of this is over before it’s even begun!”
“Oh, I'm so sorry,” Ela said. “I had no idea. What should I call you?”
The changeling glared at her before speaking. “You should call me Ela,” she ==finally== hissed.
“But I’m Ela.”
“We both are! That is the entire point of all of this!” The changeling made a broad, circular gesture with both arms. “Put my true name from your mind, and do not speak it ever again!”

The #WIPSnips word for June 24th is "finale" (going with the World Cup inspo, this was supposed to be "final" but I made a typo on the graphic and didn't notice until I was uploading it and didn't feel like fixing it lol) #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Like the refs and whatever team is playing against the Ottawa Charge, there aren’t a lot of penalties, so I had to go way deeper into my story than any other snip yet. Guys, I think this mayor might not be a good person. #WIPSnips

“I don’t like this plan,” Ela said.

“Well, that hardly matters now, does it?” the mayor asked. “Whittier is right. Since the next thing that happens to you and your dragon is that you go back into the forest, where something terrible will certainly happen to you, it doesn’t really matter than your last screams won’t be in your native tongues now, now does it? Far better than the dragon's language stays here with me where it will be put to good use for years to come, whispering poems of love into the ears of my lovely water spirit than to be be lost when some dire beast swallows him whole.” He grinned a terrible little grin. “Or worse. He knows the ==penalty== for those that knowingly bring a Daughter of Mil into Their forests. The Others will not be kind to him, or to you.”

Ela shivered a little, but tried to look brave. She was slowly getting used to others having very low opinions about her chances on this quest, but no one had said it quite so bluntly yet.

The #WIPSnips word for June 23rd is "penalty" The words this week were absolutely not inspired by the fact that all that's been on our TV for the last week or so is the World Cup. Nope. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Of the main characters, Rindle won’t be fully mature for another century or two, so not going to be a father within the timeframe of the story (dragons grow very slowly). Ela’s father, Isaac, was a fisherman in the old country but is a homesteader at the edge of the magical forest now.

I love animals like cats, who are both ruthless predators of things smaller than themselves but are also skittish prey animals to things larger than them. In my story, the same applies to dragons. #SundaySnips

“As a hatchling, my diminutive size is actually one of my advantages.” Rindle explained. “You have probably heard stories of large, powerful, dangerous dragons, but we actually spend most of our lives as humble prey animals first.”
“You were already caught by that dire owl, weren’t you?” Ela protested.
“I was asleep and it caught me by surprise,” Rindle protested. “But I got away from it, and that was a far more dangerous situation than being discovered by some lowly human.”
Ela frowned at him.
”…no offense intended,” Rindle concluded after a pause. “But yes, discretion is probably the best approach there, too. I would rather not be seen by any other humans, all other things being equal.”
