The struggles of unhoused and undocumented people are more interconnected than you know. An estimated 10% of unhoused Angelenos are undocumented. While ICE kidnaps people off our streets every day, city officials continue to sweep encampments and enforce anti-camping laws.
Today is the 5 year anniversary of the eviction at Echo Park Lake. A lot less has changed that you probably realized. We should all still be horrified.
LA Street Care & Mutual Aid@lastreetcare.bsky.social · 4mo agoOn March 24 and 25, 2021, Councilmember Mitch O'Farrell ordered the militarized eviction of the community that made Echo Park Lake their home for 18 months. O'Farrell is gone, but the eviction's violent legacy of criminalization and displacement continues in his former district and beyond.
There is no moral argument for Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez to continue defending Mitch O'Farrell's 41.18 zones when Hugo compared 41.18 to racial profiling and stop-and-frisk. All of his supporters should be ashamed.

Hugo continues to refuse to commit to this demand. We will continue to take action until he does.
One of the most frustrating things about entertainment industry union leadership is their refusal to endorse CalCare. Single-payer health care would remove the AMPTP's greatest piece of leverage over workers in every negotiation.
Everyone in the movement knows we must abolish 41.18, LA's law that criminalizes poor people for existing in public spaces. We don't have the votes to repeal the entire law right now, so we MUST push Hugo, Eunisses, and Ysabel to repeal the 41.18 zones their predecessors created in their districts.

Called it in February 2024 (even if the run date was 4 years off).

Anyone supporting LA Councilmember @hugoforcd13.bsky.social’s re-election need to sit with his hypocrisy. Sweeps destroy shelter/IDs, making it easier for ICE to abduct undocumented folks at encampments (already happening) at a time when many people can’t pay rent bc it’s unsafe to go to work.

If you don't know about LA's National Special Security Event designation, you have no idea what's really happening in our city. Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom handed the Department of Homeland Security unprecedented authority to coordinate with local "law enforcement" through 2028.

The issue w/ current discourse of resistance is the focus on who the “real criminals” are instead of the process of criminalization by which certain people, groups & actions will *always* be framed as threats/violent while enabling others to engage in extreme forms of violence w/ absolute impunity.
For the added cost of LAPD brutally beating Angelenos for less than a week, we could’ve given every unhoused person in the city $200.

Happening in CD 2 as well. One of the communities I serve has been swept every couple of weeks for the last 2 months. This week it was Cal Trans and LA County. Not a single service provider was present until the sweep was nearly complete.

Historic Filipinotown residents delivered a letter to LA City Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez demanding regular trash pick-ups and more help to find local housing after at least two recent city sweeps at their encampment led to valuable belongings getting taken or trashed.
