In 2015, AC Transit chose Clever Devices’ proprietary BusTime AVL system. A decade+ of implementation problems have left predictions unreliable, while its separate interface makes realtime data feed incompatible with Google Maps, Transit, and other apps, leading to mass confusion b/t apps.

Joel Young is at a rail transit conference in Europe tonight (AC Transit has 0 railroads) and I am in Oakland waiting for a bus that has been 0 minutes away for 10 minutes

Oakland Division (D4) operated only 89.9% trips this past month, a drop from 98.7% in July 2025 If you ride the bus to work every weekday this means that your bus will be canceled at least once every week kpi.actransit.org/serviceopera...

Monthly total service operated for division 4 dropping to 89.92% in July 2026

This feedback really sucks to hear, but it helps us understand the extent of the problem. I will continue to push for reliability improvements at AC Transit.

“AC Transit buses are increasingly unreliable”

A Bus That Runs Is Not Always a Bus You Can Rely On

A rider-centered analysis of AC Transit trip delivery, stop arrivals, punctuality, trip completion, and waits through summer 2026.

1T, which is the East Bay's premier BRT, is supposed to have a median wait of 5 mins. But riders are actually waiting on average for 13 mins for a bus, and 5% of the time there is a 53 minute wait which means ZERO buses running on the entire line!

Weekdays: Route 1T riders typically waited 13.0 minutes; 5% of riders waited at least 53.2 minutes.

Weekends: Route 1T riders typically waited 13.8 minutes; 5% of riders waited at least 52.6 minutes.

Most importantly - this is cool! Civic tech crashed and burned along with all the optimism of the '10s. There was some naivety, yes, but the cynicism that replaced it ha been immeasurably worse. Here's to hoping this world resuscitates.

NEW YORKERS!! This is a great opportunity for anyone already in, or looking to get into public service. Working with a mayor who cares (and who can get things done) is really a once-in-a-career opportunity, and this is a mayor who wants to get things done.
