People are reading the tea leaves on this Michigan Senate primary too closely. It’s simple: Haley Stevens is impossible to listen to. That brand of awk is too off-putting. Even if her politics were good (they aren’t) it would be a brutal uphill climb.

I’m only hard on the “Brand New Day is my favorite movie of all time” crowd because I can see 2005 me that saw Batman Begins 6-7x in the theater and went on and on about it reflecting back at me.

You watched a movie about a property you don't appreciate and a genre you clearly don't enjoy and you shared your opinion. Likewise, I read your review and then did the same.

Got very tempted to record a video review for this new Spider-Man bore that's out today. But Hannah and I both agreed that the abuse that would be heaped upon me was simply not worth it. I still bear the scars of the Shang-Chi wars after all.

I attended an excellent virtual q+a with Daniel Mendelsohn tonight where he discussed his thoughts on Nolan’s Odyssey. One really neat thing I learned: he surmises that the ending of the movie is actually lifted from Tennyson’s poem “Ulysses” and given the wealth of material he drew from, I buy it.
I really hope this is the year Leguizamo gets some awards love. Nolan has this wonderful knack for bringing in underrated vets in his movies, stretching back to Rutger Hauer in that first Batman, Eric Roberts, Matthew Modine, James Remar, Tom Berenger...feels like the culmination of something cool.
"Modern vernacular fantasy ideas get read backwards into a text that is perceived as having originated them but which doesn’t really contain them" is such a good way to put that phenomenon, holy shit. I've always wanted to find the right way to articulate that point.
I have bad OCD about putting stuff in chronological order. It’s this weird fixation my mind always defaults to. But even for me, this seems like a lot.
