P.M.Bryant@pmbryant.com · last wk.One of the best Ida Lupino movies, the thriller “Ladies in Retirement” (1941), is finally getting a blu-ray release in September. It’s from the Australian label, Imprint. They’ve released other long awaited classics (e.g. “Outrage” (1950)) a year or two ahead of their availability in the US.
So many reasons to watch this fascinating film. One of them is that No Man of Her Own is primarily set in winter, in a midwestern town (in my beloved Illinois, to be exact). Wintery noirs are rare, and this film exploits the menacing and isolating effects of that season to maximum effect.

Again, I love Keyes’ choices here. She doesn’t just turn into a fun-loving floozy. She shows how an actress with limited worldview would imagine a fun-loving floozy behaves. And as before, Linda’s so desperate to act, she’ll risk anything: a friendship, her life… #TheNoirCollective #99RiverStreet
