"We are a cost of living government now, you must not raise any prices your department is responsible for". If DfT is applying this rule to benefit drivers, I look forward to the same rule applying to train fares Eh @heidialexander.bsky.social ? bsky.app/profile/dear...

If it's true that Number 10 has banned the DVSA from raising driving test prices by £30 that's the dumbest shit I've read all week £30 is less than the cost of *one hour of driving lessons*

Trevor, darling, if you and other drivers are being fined in London then they are not "going about their lawful business", they are going about their business unlawfully. If you don't wish to obey London's traffic laws, there's an excellent train service from Canterbury.

Driving in London

SIR – You report (July 26) that motorists are being given fines in London every 2.6 seconds.

This is bad enough, but the 10 councils that failed to respond to freedom of information requests for the number of penalty charge notices issued are likely to be among the worst offenders, meaning that the figure of 13,800 fines per day could be the tip of the iceberg.

It is becoming impossible to drive in London without infringing some pedantic regulation. While it is the ambition of the likes of Sir Sadiq Kahn to make the capital traffic-free, this will clearly never be achieved.

Local councils exist to serve their residents and raise taxes to cover the cost of providing services. If they cannot manage on the money raised, they should cut their cloth accordingly. It is not their role to create an industry whose sole aim is to punish individuals going about their lawful business.

From the CoL Streets and Walkways Sub Committee 21 Jul 2026: at the next meeting on 15 Sep there is going to be yet another discussion about floating bus stops on the Aldgate to Blackfriars route. Member Alison Gowman is planning a meeting for members and officers with NFBUK prior to the committee

"Why do cyclists demand safe cycle lanes then refuse to use them?" writes David Hunter of Woking to the #FarageGraph. Well, David, probably because Woking's only "cycle lanes" are a couple of shared-use pavements that give up a every junction and side road.

SIR – I recently travelled on a bus in Woking. Ahead of the bus, there was a cyclist who ignored every cycle lane on the route. The bus was forced to crawl behind the cyclist. Every time the bus driver managed to overtake the cyclist, he then had to stop to pick up a passenger, meaning the cyclist overtook the bus. This happened all the way.

Why do cyclists demand safe cycle lanes then refuse to use them?

If lots of roads can be closed from 4am - 2pm across London on a Sunday for the triathlon, why can't they be closed another weekend for a central London-centred cut-down family-friendly Ride London event? Or, with a bit of planning, somehow combine the two? bsky.app/profile/cs3c...

1/2 #RBKC has a consultation running until 13 Sept'26 re "bringing the fun back to Kensington High Street" ... "including exploring ways to reduce the impact of traffic on the high street." Spoiler: there's naff all to "reduce impact of traffic", just some planters. Links in next post. #KHS #HSK

The vision: bring the fun back
Opportunity Kensington is working to make Kensington High Street more lively, welcoming and enjoyable. The high street has all the ingredients of a world-class location, but its full potential as a distinctive and thriving visitor destination remains untapped.

Bringing the fun back to Kensington High Street is about continuing to promote exciting new events, revitalising public spaces, extending activity into the evening and night-time, and a shift from convenience to choice.

The long-term aim is for Kensington High Street and its surroundings to become greener and better designed for people to spend time in, including exploring ways to reduce the impact of traffic on the high street.1. High Street planters
The planter installation outside Ecco forms part of the wider High Street Kensington Planters Programme. This initiative will contribute to creating a more welcoming, attractive, and environmentally enriched streetscape, supporting the broader objectives to improve pedestrian experience and strengthen the character of the high street.

In development7. Junction improvements and pavement widening
This project seeks to review the Kensington High Street to Kensington Church Street junction to identify opportunities to create a safer environment for pedestrians and cyclists.

It would involve the removal of unnecessary street furniture and widening the pavements going north and east from the junction, where they are currently most constrained. Enhanced pedestrian crossings, including a new potential crossing aligned with the Whole Foods Market entrance would also be explored.
