🧵 Why is national cycle route #NCN4 on a shared-use pavement along Chelsea Embankment in #RBKC? Well, #RBKC chose the shared-use pavement in Dec'1999 to prevent the nascent Greater London Authority GLA building a proper cycle lane on the forthcoming red-route. 1/n

Have any high street revitalisation experts talked about them often being traffic sewers that people drive through to spend elsewhere? I recently looked at Green Lanes in Haringey which is a traffic sewer being managed for long distance traffic (16.5k vehicles per day). 1/2

How will your child get to school next term? Not by car, advises TV's Dr Xander Van Tulleken. Biking or walking, he says: "You arrive at school less stressed, more relaxed, you've been able to socialise with friends and have a sense of empowerment and freedom you do not get in a car." Link 👇️

Looks like the Royal Parks are finally, after >6 years, going to open the gate at the south end of the Park Lane cycle way so cyclists and pedestrians don’t have to squeeze through the narrow ped gate. (And bypass the stupid shared space crossing to Hyde Park Corner as well)

No matter how much you've spent on a car, you still need insurance & a valid licence. Good to see the @metpoliceuk clamping down on dangerous driving in 'super' cars. Last week they seized 90 vehicles worth over £8m in an operation targeting uninsured drivers, anti-social and dangerous driving.

A UK study found that telling potential SUV buyers that those vehicles directly result in higher fatalities for pedestrians, cyclists and children had zero effect on their decision to buy them. What does work? Financial penalties: Increased fees, taxes, parking. www.theguardian.com/world/2026/j...

There's been extensive research on floating bus stops, where cycle tracks pass bus stops on a main road. They need to be designed well - but the claims they're dangerous just don't match the evidence. Without them, cycling won't be inclusive & safe for everyone. www.standard.co.uk/news/london/...

Disability campaigners call on mayor to scrap floating bus stops

The stops, first introduced in 2013, involve a cycle lane running between a bus stop and the pavement

A new direct crossing, *and* a rat run closed off, *and* more greenery, *and* almost all pavement cycling eliminated—what a massive transformation on Olympic Park Avenue. Would’ve been nice if the Olympic Park developments had been like this from the start, but hey—much, much better late than never!

The recent transformation of Olympic Park Avenue is looking excellent. One side of the bridge has been converted from a road, making a new safe bike lane connecting up the Westfield Ave cycle tracks to the Chobham residential area and Cycleway 16 into Waltham Forest. 🚲🚲🚲

With the best will in the world, the infrastructure is patchy to say the least. Have you tried cycling CS7 recently? Or the Wandle Trail through Earlsfield? It is not yet a serious proposition...

Cities are going to need many more trees to help people cope with extreme heat. Parked cars reflect heat and also increase street temperatures. So the obvious thing to do is to plant trees in the place of street parking, avoiding pavements (which will cause issues for pedestrians in the future).

When you look at funding, imagine if we funded active travel properly. Not just breadcrumbs. If we proactively looked at cycling and walking investment as exactly that. Investment, not just for today, but for people’s entire lives. The cost saving to the NHS would outweigh up front cost surely?

The correct headline would be something like: ‘motor vehicles are even more dangerous around e-scooters than around motorcycles or cycles…’, but that would identify the source of the danger so they won’t say that.

The Welsh national 20mph default speed for urban/village streets has already won the Prince Michael of Kent International Road Safety Award and will be seen as one of the most successful road safety interventions this century. #20splenty pja.co.uk/2026/08/06/r...
