I care about an ethical internet. I write about Bluesky, the atmosphere and open social protocols at connectedplaces.online 🇳🇱

i have an old galaxy watch, perfectly functional, that became obsolete when i switched from android to iphone. this weekend i/sol build a custom fitness tracker app for it that sends the data directly to my mac. so now i can use the watch again, without sending my data to samsung as a nice bonus

A weird downstream effect of LLMs I predict will start having an impact soon is that they are very helpful for fixing a lot of stuff that would not have been worth fixing when information about how to fix them was harder to get.

I have studied to become a journalist and it didn’t matter what I wore, my professor still said the n-word whenever she saw me in class. I’m one of the best thinkers in my field and nobody is going to respect me/think of me less for wearing a durag during presentations.

EYE think a few things can be true at once here. Should students be taught how to dress for professional events and interviews? Yes. Should the school create environments where that can happen? Yes. Now… should a bonnet or durag to CLASS be this controversial? I think, no lol. It’s no big deal.

currently in the help desk chat service of my bank, got switched from a bot to a person, and is it very rude to ask if i can switch back to the bot?

creating a custom feed on attie is a really smooth and great experience, this is very cool. which also makes it the contrast of getting that custom feed into your bluesky account and part of your custom feeds list just incredible painful

This week, we’re introducing Quests, an interactive research and exploration tool for the Atmosphere. You can ask Attie to pull information about trending topics, identify influential accounts in a particular field, or create a personalized daily briefing.

blueskyism is really just a battleground between the 'words mean things' legacy internet and the 'vibes only' vanguard of the new internet

the thing i love most about decentralised socials is that it continually surprises its most active proponents of how radical and disruptive it actually is

In my mind, this is one of the most important paragraphs of the last ~25 years. A lot of what's going on can be traced back to this rupture, and in this article, an assistant to G. W. Bush just... says it out loud. We are still living in their world.

For some people, X is a window into the "Empire that creates reality," to borrow that famous distinction between "reality-based communities" and "reality-creating empires." But what if that digital Empire collapses? www.nytimes.com/2004/10/17/m...

The aide said that guys like me were "in what we call the reality-based community," which he defined as people who "believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality." I nodded and murmured something about enlightenment principles and empiricism. He cut me off. "That's not the way the world really works anymore," he continued. "We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality -- judiciously, as you will -- we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors . . . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do."
