My take on boots discourse is that we face a lemons problem with many consumer goods, given the acquisition of many storied brands by companies aggressively milking accumulated brand equity for higher profits, such that price and reputation for durability does not reliably predict higher roi.

Getting real sick of slop midwives pleading for a 'respectful discussion' of AI as relates to the arts. Your use of AI to 'make art' is not respectful. It benefits from stolen art, destroys the planet, and does not make you an artist any more than someone driving 26.2 miles is a marathoner.

This is alarming for so many reasons. Down thread is information on how to support the Young Center. They are going to need all the support they can get.

I had to code and pronounce a time of death on a respiratory therapist colleague. There's a memorial plaque for her outside the emergency department to this day. I wrote and re-wrote my will. I will never forgive these ghouls trying to rewrite history and deny our experience.

I used to be categorically and staunchly against spoilers. Now I intentionally spoil everything for myself so I don’t accidentally subject myself to unnecessary sadness.

As a cross-genre writer with horror elements in my work but my books are not shelved in horror, I'd made the career choice long ago to always have a hopeful trajectory (no main characters die, love stories are requited). That's been particularly critical for me lately. My heart can't take it either.

Every Gender Studies major deserves an apology for every joke made at their expense. People studied STEM because everything was science and engineering. People studied CompSci because everything was computers. People studied Gender because as it turns out, everything actually is Gender.

Living through it in NYC: constant ambulance sirens. I cherish "Pixie" as a historical figure! It's thought her nickname came from Ellen Terry, the late 19th C's greatest actress (pictured in Sargent's FIERCE Lady Macbeth painting). Colman Smith did sets for the Lyceum Theatre where Terry worked under management by none other than Bram Stoker.

What a cool exhibit! I looked it up online. They've been generous sharing images toward the bottom of the page if anyone would like to peruse.

There is no version of yourself you could become that would satisfy the people who hate you. So you might as well be who you are.

I worked for New York’s largest medical center at the start of the pandemic. There were morgue trucks on the streets. They set up emergency medical tents in Central Park. Healthcare worker colleagues died. It is horrific that RFK Jr is on national TV lying that ICUs were empty.

Had a lovely visit with lovely friends, enjoying the Morgan Library's Tarot Exhibit! I'm pictured here paying homage to one of the most important artists of all time; Pamela Colman Smith, without whom Tarot would never have ascended to its place in modern spiritual thought. A true High Priestess.

Because if the people who live near the city-run groceries can't afford to shop in the city-run grocers, then they don't solve the problem of food deserts. This seems like basic homework Still Wancil should have done before flapping his yap.

For all the out-of-towners, in NYC city-run grocery stores are an attempt to solve the problem of food deserts. Food deserts in NYC do not tend to happen in economically healthy areas, so deeply discounted prices in them are an attempt to make them affordable to their intended customers.

Judaism is a very practical religion. Basically every rule in Judaism is accompanied by, “what do those terms mean and how are they applied?” Large swaths of Christianity came along and said, “asking for details is evil and heretical.” This seems to be a similar dynamic.

Please hate gen AI even harder. You can do it. I believe in you. Do it for the planet. Hate the lazy, slop producing, environment killing, water draining, participation trophy seeking, poser creating, loser machine. Do it for humanity.
