Of all the harm this administration has done to US science, today's proposed changes to the way federal grants are awarded and administered is the most damaging yet. The text of the federal register document is impenetrably tedious by design, so here's an excellent summary of what it says.

Ok so yeah, this has quickly become the #1 misunderstanding about the canceled grants the grants are not “subsidies” or “entitlements” to Harvard or Princeton or whatever they aren’t going into universities’ endowments they are competitive contracts won by these universities to do research

Maya Sen@mayasen.bsky.social · last yr.

There is a PR narrative quickly emerging about “entitlement” of elite universities, as if this $ is some sort of subsidy Harvard & others must counter this quickly The $ doesn’t flow into Harvard’s coffers - this is grant money, most of which goes to research the govt has agreed has social value

Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) has a bill to return tariff authority to Congress. If it were to pass, the purposeless tariffs would end. Speaker Johnson is blocking it. Call your member of Congress, R or D, & urge a discharge petition on the bill, which forces a vote. U.S. Capitol switchboard: 202-224-3121.

Been thinking about this for more than a year; finally put it into words here. Kinda drawing together threads around Josh Kline, Skibidi Toilet, Lasagna Cat, M3gan, Pepe the Frog, 'Brave New World,' Ghostbusters, $TrumpCoin into some kind of theory... news.artnet.com/art-world-ar...

So one of the things that I think is lost on AI proponents is what I call the card catalog effect, a thing I shouldn’t call it because a lot of people probably have no experience with a card catalog.

Making a separate thread of the immigration, heath, and education resources that @agounardes.bsky.social, @cmshahanahanif.bsky.social, and @joannesimonbk52.bsky.social shared at their townhall yesterday. Get ready for a BIG THREAD of great links, NYC!

The antidote for despair is action ❤️ * Dial (202) 224-3121 * Enter zip code * Leave voicemail * Say “My name is ___, I’m a constituent in [town]. (If clinician/scientist, say so) “The NIH freeze harms research and patients and must be lifted immediately.” Be brief. Staffers tally all calls. Go! ✅

NIH funding supports the vast majority of all biomedical research in the United States. Virtually every advance in American medicine and biological science comes from NIH. This is a blow against American science. Call Congress, 202-224-3121.

As we careen into uncertainty, people have a lot of questions about safety, security, access to medical care, funding, transportation, and legal support. So we made an interactive library for some of the best resources we've found. www.doomsayer.me/resources/

Community Resources

We've noticed that there are so many great resources out there, but most people don't even know where to start looking for them. So we decided to put them all in one place for folks. Have a tool we sh...

So, you may ask, why do I get so angry about the new liberal spin on RFK Jr, as in, "he gets some things right, so let's collaborate on those" or "we have to work with him because he has a huge following we need to reach"? Because I've seen this movie before. 1/

Hi everyone! Let’s do a thread🧵 on keeping safe as an immigrant in any sort of status in the incoming Trump era Some suggestions for people in safe immigration status including the native born will be peppered through!

Mary Oliver said, “Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination,” and Eden Phillpotts said, “The world is full of magical things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper,” and I think the poets know things we’re in danger of forgetting.
