Socialism is what they called public power. Socialism is what they called social security. Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent labor organizations. Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people. —Harry Truman, 1952

News organizations should periodically stop and look in the mirror and ask themselves “Have we internalized copspeak to the point that our headlines indistinguishable from police department email subject lines?”

stuff like this is why one important avenue for court reform is just nixing the shadow docket altogether and forcing these people to explain themselves to the public when they issue orders. also, making their records property of the united states and subject to publication when they leave the bench.

Amy Coney Barrett just told Congress that it would be inappropriate to explain the reasoning behind the Court’s unreasoned shadow docket orders. As if unreasoned judicial orders are a thing. They are not. The reasoning is the whole point.

Key point with this piece is that Mandami is pushing back against the McKinsey approach to governing. Alondra Nelson actually put this best: "How a City interacts with its people shouldn’t be outsourced. It should be local and accountable."

Done right, digital government can help millions of people save hundreds of millions of dollars, and hours and hours of time. Done wrong, it can be costly, useless, discriminatory or even dangerous. How a City interacts with its people shouldn’t be outsourced. It should be local and accountable.

New w @pamherd.bsky.social: Mamdani just announced PIT Crew — an NYC tech unit that will build digital public products. Takeaway: Mamdani is reclaiming a vision of tech in govt for progressives, one not driven by consultants and which solves real problems. 🧵 donmoynihan.substack.com/p/mamdani-in...

I won an award at Sundance years ago and Sam Neill, whom I did not know, tweeted to me “we’re all so proud of you, sweetheart”. I can’t even express what that meant to me. That our most beloved national treasure, a man I worshipped, would take the time to write to me!

Ideally I don’t think politicians need to be emphasizing how masculine or feminine they are. This obsession with asserting traditional gender roles is a very clear conservative agenda and it’s a bunch of made up bullshit anyways

The fact that J.K. Rowling successfully bullied Amnesty International into taking down a report that accurately called out her attack on trans people, especially trans women, is so repulsive and such a display of the power of her money, and her choice to put her vast fortune behind persecution.

Amnesty removes report that called JK Rowling's centre 'anti-rights'

Amnesty International UK has removed a report which labelled JK Rowling's sexual abuse crisis centre Beira's Place as "anti-rights".

Lindsey Graham spent the last decade of his life in public service as a US Senator, trying hard to be remembered as an enemy of the Constitution who worked to destroy American democracy and exhibited occasional signs that he knew why that was bad but kept doing it anyway. I will honor his choice.

When a politician dies we see a lot of hagiographies about them. If you mention they were a terrible person IRL, you get chastised. My feeling? If you don't want people to talk shit about you after you die, don't be shitty when you're alive.

NY Tmes exec editor Joe Kahn said in 2024 that the issue of democracy's survival was not a top priority in his newsroom's coverage. Now Trump is sending federal agents to NYT reporters' homes to deliver subpoenas over coverage he doesn't like. I wonder if democracy is a priority for Joe now.

Mark Jacob@markjacob.bsky.social · 4w ago

The Trump regime issued subpoenas to NY Times journalists over their reporting on Trump’s new Qatari-donated Air Force One. NYT called the subpoenas “an extraordinary escalation in Trump’s efforts to threaten and intimidate independent news organizations.” The dictator Trump hates the free press.

Congratulations to all the men now mansplaining ancient Egyptian pyramid construction to me, an Egyptologist who has excavated pyramids and works on a pyramid site and has surveyed the pyramid fields. Truly, you are doing the Lord's work. Go cry to your mummies.

People are right to be mad about the predictable Platner fiasco, but it's worth remembering that last year a ton of establishment Democrats supported disgraced sexual harasser Andrew Cuomo against clean-as-a-whistle Zohran. Tolerating problem men is an issue across the ideological spectrum.

I adore you Leon, Egyptologist here, they were built by a largely volunteer force (corvée labor) of 25,000. The builders were very well fed, paid in bread and beer, and received excellent medical care. There was no slavery whatsoever, it is a common misconception.

um, so everyone cheering on egypt in the world cup realizes how the pyramids were built right? but i guess that's a conversation you're not ready to have

Sen. Bernie Sanders on the Maine U.S. Senate race: “I have spoken with Graham Platner about the best path forward for Maine. In light of these very serious allegations, I have recommended that he step aside.”
