Keeping an eye on it while you write can save you the pain of having an editor ask you (sometimes months later) for the URL that you'd intended to include. (If we ask you, it probably means we couldn't easily find it by searching online, which could mean it then becomes a massive faff for you.)
We're insulting each other in the Shakespearean way. You can see how translating the Bard could be hard. New episode with Daniel Hahn, author of "If This Be Magic". becauselanguage.com/142-if-this-... Shakespeare Insult Generator codepo8.github.io/shakespeare-...

Finnish people out there. Do you know whether a Finnish academic who is between jobs can contribute one post to my non-commercial blog without risking their unemployment benefits being cut?
A dream episode of @becauselanguage.com for my translator peeps. The Daniels (Hahn and Midgley) talk about translating Shakespeare (& etc.) and how the work of the translator is to keep everything but the words. The interview starts at 49:30, but the whole ep is ace. www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNkC...

> Something seems to be lost on my peers today: it’s still easy to not use AI. [...] Eschewing AI is one thing that we can actually do to live out ethics that affirm values of human and environmental rights. It’s almost a gift! Just use a computer the same way you did three years ago!
“Potentially Useful | Hating AI in 2026” https://www.eamoncaddigan.net/posts/ai-in-2026/ > We can point out all of the harms being done by the technology right now, and we can speak to the additional harms that will be done if things continue like this, but our concerns are spurned or ignored.
Following Spain v France just by listening to all the shouting here in San Sebastián. I heard the first goal while walking around *with noise canceling earbuds in and listening to a power walk playlist*.
I can't bear to read about or see images related to the San Fermines encierro, and living not far from Pamplona and following Spanish media, they're constant. And now muted. I will never understand the appeal of this risky and cruel bit of "fun".
True for the self-employed too. There’s a good probability that people who might have hired a freelancer have been convinced that a machine can do the job just as well at lower cost. Some will realize their mistake, but the time between FA and FO is long & quite rough for the humans caught between.
Banger quotes throughout the book: “The fact that there’s a low probability that an AI will be able to do your job doesn’t change the fact that there’s a high probability that an AI salesman will convince your boss to fire you and replace you with an AI that can’t do your job” (65).
I just spent an amazing week facilitating a writing retreat for 16 women researchers at Euskal Herriko Unibersitatea–University of the Basque Country, helping them get heaps of productive writing & reflecting in while being mindful of the body that writes & the benefits of writing in company.

AI can't translate. It can give you the gist of a text, but not an accurate, well-written translation. Meanwhile, translators are being replaced by AI, and many are leaving the business. Language courses are closing down. So basically a whole profession and its skills are being wiped out.
What the fuck is it good for? Im asking sincerely. Medical people say its shit for diagnosing, its utter garbage for creative fields, it cannot teach and hallucinates false answers, programmers have to fix its code half the time, businesses find it doesn't help productivity and it causes psychosis.
And 9pm BST / 10 pm CEST. A nice way to prime some editorial dreams. 😁
