I’m in West Virginia, improbably enjoying a wine (Leirana) from Rias Biaxas on the first Sunday of August, and cheese from the Canary Islands, in celebration of the feast of vino Alberiño. I made chickpeas and kale with tomatoes and peppers from our garden. Someday I hope to see Spain in person. 🇪🇸

A year ago today was my dad’s final full day on earth. He died just before 1:00am on the 30th. I miss him. I’m with my mom today, in the mountains. We visited the Alpine Lake veterans memorial this morning.

While I'm not in higher ed, NCTE's decision to shutter CCCC is another example of institutional and organization failure at a time when unwavering strength is necessary. It's also a bad omen for the future of our professional organization and another reason for K-20 solidarity moving forward.

Email from NCTE Executive Committee acknowledging messages received and the following: For many years, the Conference on College Composition & Communication (CCCC) played a critical role in serving the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) & its mission. In recent years, however, CCCC has struggled with its fiscal sustainability, declining participation, & governance challenges. As a result, earlier today the Executive Committee of NCTE made the difficult decision to de-charter its special topics conference CCCC. To clarify, today’s decision to de-charter does not mean that NCTE has altered its commitment to supporting teachers at the college and university level. This is exemplified by the fact that the NCTE College Section is thriving. The process in making this decision spanned several years, with attempts to work collaboratively with CCCC’s executive committees across multiple iterations. While the organization appreciates the years of collaboration with CCCC, after deep evaluation and thoughtful consideration, the Executive Committee concluded this step was necessary to more effectively serve the college English and writing and composition community and NCTE membership as a whole. Although this has been a very difficult decision, we are excited about the future. This change will allow us to provide better support to the college English and writing and composition community. In the coming days and weeks, we will be working hard to make this transition as smooth as possible. We thank CCCC, its leaders, and its members for its many years of contributions and look forward to continuing to involve the composition, rhetoric, and writing communities as we move forward. NCTE remains devoted to improving the teaching and learning of English and the language arts at all levels of education. As future planning takes place, NCTE will communicate updates. A transition team focused on supporting composition, rhetoric, & writing studies will be named imminently.

The thing no one told me about being in my 50s is how most of the women I know are grieving. Many of us have lost one or both parents by now, or are caught up in caregiving for the elders who remain. It’s been a continuous string of obituaries the past few years. It’s rough seas.

It’s as easy to believe that we have souls that go somewhere beautiful when we die as it is to believe that we enter the void. We don’t know, can’t know. No one has ever known. If it’s essentially a choose your own adventure story, why not choose one that gives comfort?

My grandmother had an evil stepmother (who was only ever called Stepmother) because her mother died in the 1918 flu pandemic. My grandmother left school after 8th grade to sell cigarettes and snacks to the men working the coal barges on the Monongahela River. Life was so much harder then than now.

Your reminder that fairy tales are full of stepmothers because women once routinely died in childbirth, from postpartum sepsis, or from other infectious diseases and left behind housefuls of motherless children. Stable nuclear families are made possible by vaccines, antibiotics, and safe abortions.

I made a really nice supper — Thai peanut noodle salad, stir fried tofu with bok choy. I was maybe three bites in when a big chunk of tooth cracked off a rear molar. This is a first for me. I’m disintegrating. Of course this happens at 7pm on a Friday night.
