Es ist so frustrierend, wenn die eigene Schwiegermutter nicht verstehen will, dass man Nazis erstens als solche benennen muss und zweitens die eine Bedrohung für ihre eigene Enkeltochter darstellen. Vor allem, wenn sie in der Nachbarschaft wohnen. Will schreien.

London stands in solidarity with Berlin’s LGBTQ+ community. This is why Pride matters. Those who seek to spread hatred and division will never win.

Really sad to see what happened at Berlin Pride last night. The failure here, is the German police who were ‘tracking’ the criminal*. The far right will seek to make propaganda out of an evil act, which they would have liked to carry out, themselves. They hate LGBTQ ppl more than any other group.

Two of my oldest gay friends - in fact just two of my oldest friends full stop - just got homophobically attacked. They’re both in tech so I’m sure a number of you guys know them too. The most important thing is that they’re not (I think) permanently damaged. But it was a close run thing.

Simon and I were homophobically attacked in Brussels last week so seriously we ended up in hospital. We're safe now, have been medically treated, have completed all our police reports, and are being cared for by the very best chosen family and true community we could ever have wished for. We planned to wait a few days before sharing, mostly to make sure that we'd spoken to our families and loved ones before they read about it on social media, but we can now confirm that these stories are about us. Simon and I have been participating in a wonderful European queer choir festival called Various Voices Choir Festival, attended by about 4000 singers from across the world. Every four years it's hosted by a different choir and city and this year it was in Brussels. On Thursday night, four of us started walking the couple of hundred metres back to our central Brussels hotel from the gay bar district, holding hands as we dia. We'd only got one street away before someone threw some kind of liquid at us. Simon turned round to see what had happened, and if someone had spilt a drink, and saw three young men at a table who pretended not to speak English. When he turned to walk away they threw liquid again and we knew it wasn't an accident.We walked a little further before deciding to turn back to call out their behaviour. Simon calmly said "that's not OK you know" and I took their photo. Immediately one of the guys got up and lunged at me punching me multiple times in the jaw, throat and head, and knocking me to the ground where I hit my head hard on the cobbled stone pavement. I don't remember being on the ground, but I'm told by the others I was with that suddenly, several other men appeared and I was flat on the pavement surrounded by seven people. I do remember clearly hearing Simon scream "Not him! Leave him alone!". Simon and the other two people we were with (I' let them choose whether to name themselves or not) saved me, perhaps my life, but certainly from much more serious injuries by dragging the men off me. In the process Simon was punched multiple times and had his nose broken in two places, and one of our other friends was also hit, but fortunately not seriously injured. All of them are heroes. I love them and could not be more grateful. The wonderful people, and there are many, of Brussels ran out of the surrounding bars and the attackers fled. They helped us to the Police station who immediately called us an ambulance and took us to hospital where we spent the night. The doctors were excellent. Almost immediately Simon was sent for a CT scan which confirmed that his nose was broken in two places, and that he'd very likely need surgery to fix it. While Simon was in radiology the doctor examined my jaw and head and confirmed that whilst I had a number of serious haematomas and was slightly concussed, my jaw wasn't broken and my skull was intact. Some of my teeth had moved around a bit, but still have all of them.These thugs were organised. They knew what they were doing, where they were sitting and what type of people they wanted to target. They weren't interested in robbing us, they were interested only in attacking us because they're homophobic and we're queer, and somehow their fragile masculinity feels a bit better if they hurt someone that they see as weaker than them. It's pathetic really. I'm certain that if it hadn't been us, they'd have attacked someone else that night. Whilst we are shocked that it was us, we're the gentlest people in the world, we're grateful that it wasn't one of the many more fragile than us people at the festival. We will heal and recover, and are already beginning to do so. It could have been so much worse. Despite spending all night in hospital and not being able to breathe through his nose Simon, with the support of the incredible Barberfellas, decided he still wanted to perform in the "Royalties" concert that evening, which the Barbies were opening alongside Queer Essence, Ukraine's LGBTQI+ choir. Partly in solidarity with our incredible Ukrainian friends who have suffered so much more than we can even begin to imagine: partly because there's no homophobe in the world that can stop Simon getting his bum out on stage; partly because we'd already carried his costume all around Europe. I'm so proud of him. These thugs and people like them feel they have permission to attack us because evil self-interested politicians are emboldening them more every day with their hate speech and telling them not just that violence is OK, but that people different from them deserve it.Don't fall for the "Pride is unnecessary" narrative. Straight cis people don't get beaten up in the streets just for existing. If you're queer like us, or identify as any other part of the LGBTQI+ family, then know that we love you, and (Simon and I have talked about this and both completely agree we would, without hesitation, use our privilege again to call out homophobia, transphobia, or hate speech, actions or crimes of any type. The actions we took were aligned with our values, and we won't be silenced by fear from trying to protect ourselves or others even if it sadly comes at some risk to ourselves. What can you do to help? If you're straight and/or cis then we need your help and support more than ever. Allyship is critical. Please help us counter the identity politics hate speech that puts all minorities at real risk every day, and make clear that violence isn't acceptable. At the very minimum please never ever consider giving your vote to someone espousing hate, they'll use it to legitimise their violence. If you're able to do more, join us in speaking out against hate, and help us educate the people who are being lied to and radicalised against each other by politicians. To those who reached out, we love you and appreciate you. To those who gave us some space, we love you too. To the festival organisers, thank you for helping us share the information necessary to keep other participants safe and aware whilst respecting our privacy. To those of you who are only finding out now, we weren't keeping anything from you, we just needed a little space before speaking. We love you too. James Cronin and Simon Pearson
