I have a second piece in @ftweekend.com in which, as I approach my 60th, I celebrate all the things I will not apologise for hating. It was very therapeutic to write. www.ft.com/content/6bdd...
Love how the commentators are trying to blame stopping for a drink of water on England losing possession and momentum. #englandnorway #engnor
Year of the Fire Horse. My year. I reckon we can do it. We did it the year I was born. (Might delete 🤣) #WorldCup #englandnorway #engnor
I’ve just picked THE MOST fragrant bunch of flowers in THE HISTORY of time. My garden is delivering right now. #bloomscrolling #flowerphotography #eastcoastkin #honeysuckle #sweetpeas #lavender
My honeysuckle is intoxicating this evening. Like - it knocked me backwards when I went to put the bins out. Beautiful. Lucky bees.
Unsolicited writing advice, no. 303: Scene-setting doesn't have to be an entire page of description: you can do as much with a well-placed detail (a sound, a scent, a menu, a reflection of buildings in the water) than with a whole travelogue.
Heads up, Yorkshire based screenwriters and playwrights. The Kay Mellor Fellowship award is now open for submissions. Working alongside Leeds Playhouse and Rollem films you’ll develop scripts for stage/screen. Closing date: 10th August. Bursary: £10,000. www.leedsplayhouse.org.uk/job/the-kay-...

I can’t begin to explain how much it’s benefitted me to start making art again after a very long time away. It’s quiet and absorbing, and even though I’m Not Great, I can see old skills resurrecting, and I improve pretty quickly. I’m able to let the horrors go, and concentrate on what I’m doing.
See also: direct young people’s theatre and move on to ‘professional’ theatre. When you can deliver a professionally made show, on time, with a cast of 60, rehearsing for 2 hours a week you can DEFINITELY rehearse with circa 4 paid actors, full time, for 4 weeks with a full time production team 🤦🏻♀️
Unsolicited writing advice, no. 1378: Many would-be authors make the mistake of believing that you "start off" as a children's writer, then "move on" to writing for adults. This is both completely incorrect, and terribly disrespectful to children's authors.

Rescued 2 little juvenile Hedgehoglets today, dehydrated in the midday sun. Meet Arthur and Billie. I’ll be tracking their progress at the Rescue Centre before they return to my garden. If you see juveniles (or any hedgehog) out during the day then assume all is not ok. #hedgehogs #hedgehogrescue
“You’ll never meet an artist saying: “God, I wished I’d been President of the Bank of America”. But you might meet a dying President of the Bank of America who said: “You know, I’d rather have been a poet or an artist. It would be that way round, wouldn’t it?” David Hockney.
Well here we are. End of an era. Thank you Nick Ahad for taking such care with this. (I can see why you’re also an Olivier award playwright). Copyright laws prevent me screenshotting the whole article but this is a good chunk. bit.ly/4xwgnsf
Someone asked me what my poetry is about. I replied: “People.” They said: “That’s a broad subject.” I said: “Not really. It’s the same story every time. Someone trying to be free. Someone trying to be loved. Someone trying to survive.” Anyway, I put a few hundred pages of that story into a book.
Sometimes a day is just perfect. Cuppa with my bestie, now in my little conservatory with the rain drumming on the roof. Warm. Painting with no one to worry about.
RESURFACING acrylic on beech board Happy #worldoceanday all. As an islander the ocean runs through my veins, my heart, my soul. Here’s a painting I did today in honour of the mighty sea. #abstractart #seascape #artyear #artistsofbluesky
On the back of losing my job from next month, my wonderful dad has sent me the money for an annual pass to Dalby Forest. His message was “I thought you’d like to be able to hug trees whenever you needed to”. 😢 ♥️ 🌳
Late as always on a Saturday for #blueskyartshow but here we are. Not really fulfilling the #busy theme but nevertheless art, Bluesky, Saturday! Heavy Head. Acrylic on canvas.
These gigantic red oriental #Poppies are just SO diva. #EastCoastKin #FlowersOnSunday #FlowerReport #FlowerPhotography #FlowerSky #BloomScrolling #NaturePhotography #PhotographersofBluesky #Stunday
My #tall painting for #BlueskyArtShow. A favourite of mine. Maybe it’s called ‘so close and yet so far away’ Anyway some tall rocks with tiny houses. Or massive houses on gargantuan rocks. I dunno. I just paint it 😊
Apologies to the older folks we used to judge for eating dinner at 5 and being in bed by 9. You guys were really on to something.
‘Shoulders Back, Head Held High’ Oil on canvas. Been tickling away at this one for a while and it fell into place today. I might add a few final touches but I might not! It works any way up so not sure where to sign. As is so often the case. 🥴😁 #abstractart #artyear #oilpainting
