A while ago, before I broke out enough to write full time, I went looking for work and found nothing but 'AI trainer' 'jobs' available. What was hysterically funny was that one outfit wanted someone with multiple awards (think Hugo or Nebula) and commercial success to work for... $15/hour.

Jobs for "AI prompt-writers" are being advertised for significantly more pay than actual writing jobs. I'm losing my fucking mind.

JJJ: Parker! Get in here! PP: Hello Mister Jameson. JJJ: Petra- PP: I actually go by Penny now, sir. JJJ: Penny? What about Petra? PP: It didn't really fit. I was trying too hard. JJJ: Fine, Penny! But get me fresh photos of spiderwoman, or it won't just be your old name that's dead! Now get out!

You keep the nails of your first two fingers short for lesbian sex. I keep the nails of my first two fingers short for typing. We are tragically the same.

AI RANT Following the cancellation of three major debut book deals over AI suspicions, I decided to put my own (needless to say, 100% human-written) prose to the test. My detector of choice was Originality AI, and the results proved to be jarring, to say the least. 🧵1/5

Art is not the picture on the wall or the 'meaning' behind it, but what happens to you as you engage with it. That's the actual art! That's what it means to engage with art, and art criticism is about trying to understand this.

The point of a good novel isn't "A happened, then B, then C," but how the story is written to provoke you as you read through it. Good writing *does something to you*, and the plot is just the vehicle for that. The novel is the feelings, thoughts, discomforts, uncertainties, and the realisations.

What’s a thing from your area of expertise (or special interest) that you think it would behoove everyone else to know?

Every author needs to learn the skill of saying "This person is not my reader, anyone who'd take them seriously is not my reader, not only do I lose nothing by blocking them but I actively keep the vibes positive by doing so." Curate your audience! Yes, especially the general public!

I'm not going to tag Ursula in this (though she's welcome to reply) because my thread isn't going to be about the Astarion book or if BG3 is a "horny" game or any of that nonsense. Instead, this is about the online demands for the perfect rape victim in fiction. (thread)

Just chiming in on this. Astarion is very much loved by people bc of this trauma and SA survival. Reducing the audience to just horny poeple and its a horny game comes across as a bit disrespectful. Why did you make it smutty during a time when he was gtting SD'd like A LOT?

Ursula: the book also covers large chunks of his youth.

reply: while you ask us to give the book a chance, some current reviews raise concerns about asterion being out of character, esp the choice to give him intimate moments during a period when he's heavily affected by SA. I'd genuinely like to understand why.

How I feel about a book is also the same at every stage: 4k into draft — This is so hard 4k released — I hope this lands 8k into draft — This is so hard 8k released — I hope this lands ... 780k into draft — This is so hard 780k released — I hope this lands

🧵 Horror movie premise: a couple of true crime podcasters wake up in a lethal escape room, discovering they've been kidnapped. They're presented with clues to their own kidnapping, and a challenge to escape: record an episode identifying who did this, and why. Progressing unlocks more clues.

I would learn calligraphy, and also to paint and make visual art. I don't really have enough time left in a human lifetime to really master it, but I'd love to have beautiful handwriting and to be able to paint as well as I can write. Then? I'd commit to a *really* long-running story.

Suppose you knew you were going to live to 1,000+ and have no income concerns. What are some projects you'd take on that you don't now because you don't have those conditions? (like, e.g. you could breed new versions of some plant with a very long reproductive cycle)

We need to drop the "so you hate waffles" meme and start responding to such wild misreads as "ah, three-cueing illiteracy strikes again." More seriously: we really need to enforce a basic social rule of "seek clarification *in good faith* before going off on someone's posts."

Bluesky is sort of a dark forest for discourse, where, upon encountering a human being, you need to immediately try to take a kill shot. Anyway, please don’t accuse me of plagiarism and demand my resignation because you imagined my anti-plagiarism blog post said the opposite of what it does

if you like books intended for children about wizards with facial scarring who go off to magic school, forge meaningful friendships, and go on to save the world, ursula k. le guin’s earthsea series is right there, and actually worth reading

We should really work together, hand and hand, to focus all of our community’s poorly-suppressed and totally ruthless bullying energy on the single demographic we all agree actually deserves it: Harry Potter Adults in the year of our lord 2026

I really don't understand it. The AI basically has a few buttons it can press to actually do things. Just give me the buttons. Dont make me flirt with a predictive text generator to make it press the buttons. Why does anyone think this is good?
