The biggest gift for an academic is time to do research in peace and quiet. That’s exactly what the Berlin Institute of Advanced Studies offers. Thrilled to be a fellow for the academic year 2026/2027. I’m back in the German capital!

“Oil hasn't reached the profit rates of tech companies” is an absurd defense of staggering windfall profits in fossil fuels. It's like saying because we are not living under feudalism, there is no problem with inequality.

Economics can either enable the slide toward fascism, or defend affordability, dignity, and democracy. I wrote ANTI-FASCIST ECONOMICS with my baby by my side—a constant reminder that the future should be livable for all. Out in October with Random House.

Gro Harlem Brundtland, the Norwegian PM who defined 'sustainable development' in 1987, led the country through its oil boom. In May 2026 Norway 🇳🇴 opened 70 new exploration blocks, 38 in the Arctic Barents Sea. It plans to keep producing for decades, even as the planet burns 🔥

Since 1989, the CO₂ from #Norway 🇳🇴 oil has outweighed everything the country has emitted at home in its entire history. Now at 13.8 Gt from the crude, against 2.8 Gt of national emissions since 1751. Counting gas too, it is 20 Gt.

Can I say (and not just because I’m one of the editors) - @desmog.com has been on the right side of history on climate change for decades, taking on significant legal risk to expose Big Oil’s allies. And we’re gonna keep on doing it.

Numbers similar to those in US still behind Trump. Question is , is 70% majority going to let itself be used/destroyed by this minority? Inaction, and special interest greed/egos need to be overcome- at individual level - if better life is to be created for vast majority.Action supports/creates hope

Nigel Farage's image is cracking. After questions about an undeclared £5 million gift from a crypto billionaire, and money from a convicted fraudster, the public is seeing through the "outsider" act.

Expecting those embedded in system to materially change it is fantasy. Use collective wisdom via deliberative citizens’ assembly to advise/lead. We need to stop lazily expecting someone/those “up there” to have the best option. Can we find a “leader” courageous enough to trust human capacity?

The Brown Review's incredibly minimal version of this was to add devolution to the list of things (currently just suspending elections) the house of lords can block outright. A semi parliamentary approach would be a stronger version of this alexparsons.co.uk/blog/posts/s...

Yes, written constitution is a diversion. If Burnham is serious about building trust and legitimacy of UK government, priority needs to be start respecting the public. Stop hiding ( lying about) serious risks and share @nebriefing.bsky.social so communities/country can work collectively.

Alex Parsons@alexparsons.bsky.social · 3d ago

So I think the written constitution conversation is a bit at cross purposes because Burnham means it almost entirely in a German basic law, entrench devolution and regional equality way.

Another ex-serviceman was arrested under the UK Terrorism Act outside Westminster Magistrates Court for saying “I support Palestine Action, and I urge you all to support Palestine Action.” He was among 152 arrested for a range of alleged crimes, facing up to 14yrs in prison.

I suppose we should be grateful the Sunday Times is both-sidesing the idea we should try to cut carbon emissions, rather than dismissing it outright. But it’s still further evidence of how mainstream reporting on climate has got dramatically worse in recent years. www.thetimes.com/article/ed72...

How wildfires put climate (and net zero deadlines) back on the agenda

Much of the country is experiencing the extreme heat scientists have long warned about, but reignited political debate shows no sign of finding consensus

Being arrested under the UK Terrorism Act has become a badge of honour. More than 1,850 hearings were listed in Westminster court on Thursday alone. Andy Burnham: Lift The Ban on Palestine Action. End UK complicity in Israel’s genocide. Go to wedonotcomply.org to get involved.

AMAZING MOMENT A woman came back still wearing a custody tshirt having been released for a terrorism arrest. While being arrested for declaring support for Palestine Action a second time, another woman came back to do the same. The opposition to this ban cannot be contained.

As suspected, the "millionaire exodus from the 🇬🇧 UK" turned out to be yet another right-wing media myth. The data suggest that millionaire emigration is, in reality, negligible close to 0% rather than the mass flight so confidently proclaimed.
