Just rescued a plasmid I had frozen down as E. coli stock 10 years ago, did a midi-prep with a kit older than 8 years, and diagnostic restriction digests with enzymes >10 years past their best-before date. Worked perfectly, sometimes thriftiness pays off

We are proud to publish this thoughtful & nuanced article by Aylward et al. on the Genetics Society's changing relationship with eugenics over the past 100 years. 'Eugenics and the Genetics Society' by Alex Aylward, Daniel J. Fairbanks, Maria Kiladi & Gregory Radick www.nature.com/articles/s41...
One of the most annoying and frustrating things as a yeast geneticist is having to work against genetic linkage during strain construction 😬

The truth is that the scientific process is horribly inefficient and wasteful. But the solution is NOT cutting funds and it’s NOT top down guidance of what should be studied. Instead, we should revolutionize how we publish and improve peer review.

Here are my favourite facts from the @gensocuk.bsky.social Medal Talk and Balfour lecture. Of course much more fascinating information was also included! 1) siRNAs cause the triploid block which kills triploid maize progeny, which are bad 2) Alternative approached to getting ancient omics sequencing
