I like tides. Here's a thread by others about tidal variations on a little-known 18.6 year "lunar node tide" cycle, that has surprisingly large impacts ranging from coastal flooding risks to Arctic coastal air temperatures to Antarctic dense water formation.

Pleased to have been involved in this study. I'm always keen to see how tides affect ice, and it still surprises me that moving kilometer-thick ice up and down by just a meter or so can affect grounded ice flow tens of kilometers inland.

Parts of the Antarctic Ice Sheet stick to the bed most of the time but lurch forward once or twice per day, synchronized to the daily ocean tides. A new study led by Zachary Katz, CO School of Mines, demonstrates that monthly and longer-term variability in tides affects the slip events.

It's been a really tough start to 2026, and no sign it'll get better. Gotta get out to enjoy the sunny days. A Hooded Merganser couple at our local pond.

NCAR is quite literally our global mothership. Everyone who works in climate and weather has passed through its doors and benefited from its incredible resources. Dismantling NCAR is like taking a sledgehammer to the keystone holding up our scientific understanding of the planet. Unbelievable.

I'm not going to AGU but this is a good reason not to. Decades ago, AGU stopped using NO for Ocean Sciences to protest David Duke. Here it's the Feds, not Louisiana, that's the problem, but you want Red states to check the Feds out of self-interest

@agu.org is in a tricky situation with the federal paramilitaries in New Orleans — they can’t make security promises if they aren’t sure they can keep them, and if the state-run convention authority is telling them they can’t bar warrantless agents, they can’t promise to do so.
