They have made it SUPER easy to email your Sentaors to vote no on Jim O'Neill, who is massively unqualified to run NSF - in fact, he's likely being nominated ot help destory it, as usual per Trump. This took me literally one minute. Add your voice. Please.
Let your senators know he's unqualified to lead the NSF, and his record raises concerns about political interference, misinformation, and conflicts of interest. Easily email your senators at: tr.ee/NoToONeill (2/2🧵) #JimONeill #NSF #NoToONeill #NationalScienceFoundation #StandUpForScience
I am reviewing a simply amazing paper from a relatively young US-based lab, which is in danger of shutting its doors later this year. My emotions are all over the place. The fact that this does not uniquely identify the lab I’m referring to just deepens the tragedy of this moment in US science.
The best news I’ve seen today. A big win, although it may only be a temporary one, for Science. Impeach and remove RFK Jr.!!!
Opening with a quote from Carl Sagan, a U.S. district court in Massachusetts issued a 45-page temporary injunction that BLOCKS some of the anti-vaccine decisions from Health Secretary RFK Jr. Gift link: www.nytimes.com/2026/03/16/h... (1/2🧵)

The NIH has lost its scientific integrity. So we left
“We can no longer lend our credibility to an organization that has lost its integrity,” write four scientists and administrators who recently resigned from the NIH.

"The $7.3 billion National Cancer Institute (NCI), NIH’s largest institute, is also feeling the effects. At a recent public meeting, Deputy Director Doug Lowy noted the NOFO approval process now requires 16 steps. He joked that it’s now more complex than a 1929 Rube Goldberg design for a can opener"

On top of the slowdown in grantmaking I wrote about last week - this is another deeply worrisome trend for scientists, physicians, patients, families, and basically anyone who wants new treatments and new tools to promote health. 🆘🧪🥼 open.substack.com/pub/elizabet...

“Dr. Pilloud said that she felt like she had to present ideas that were not scientifically sound — such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s new, and widely disputed, guidance about vaccines” I realize I am fortunate, but I genuinely cannot imagine doing this.

Rage coding this morning using #TidyTuesday NSF grant terminations data. Research in STEM Education and Social, Behavioral, & Economic Science is clearly being targeted by the current administration. I made a lot of depressing #rstats plots, check them out jenrichmond.github.io/posts/2025-0...
Powerful graphic. In a single day on April 25, a DOGE-fueled NSF canceled 340,226 future days of research. Or 932 years. [And that’s just one of three rounds of terminations so far.]
For #TidyTuesday this week, we're looking at data on terminations of NSF grants 📊 🎨 Using colour to highlight one category 📈 Transparency to highlight the important data ✍️ Annotations instead of a legend for transparency #RStats #ggplot2 #DataViz

Check this chart. Purple line: NIH actual budget (as passed by Congress) after 2000. This is in real (inflation-adjusted) dollars. The Trump/Vought proposal for 2026 (yellow) is catastrophic, for US science and medical cures for Americans. That's a massive drop.
I am so heartened to this seriously AWESOME #SaveNSF website go up today!!!! Has a take action toolkit with: 1. Press outreach templates 2. Social media toolkit 3. Elected official outreach 4. Talking points Check it out and share widely!!!! Likely more to come. www.savensf.com

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will direct federal health agencies to explore potential new treatments for measles as the U.S. faces its largest outbreak in 25 years. Experts fear the decision could have grave consequences, as studies show the existing vaccine is 97% effective in preventing infection.

The wanton destruction of academia in the US right now is pretty depressing.
🔔BREAKING🔔 The NSF has frozen all research grant awards—cutting off life-saving science midstream and demanding ideological screenings for future funding. This is censorship disguised as oversight. Here’s how you can help us spread the word ➡️🧵(1/3): www.nature.com/articles/d41...

This is the part that sticks with me about those funding cancellation letters. Funding cancellation is bad enough, but working in the effort to insult and belittle the investigator betrays the fact that is being done with vindictive and cruel intentions.
It's pretty fucking crazy to grow up with all kinds of adversity and make it into school anyway and make it into science and do all the shit people say you should do to earn your place in society and fight to help others then have your government tell you that's evil actually
I just learned that there's a national graduate student crisis line - gradresources.org. Might be worth spreading the word as I'm pretty sure exactly *checks notes* zero grad students are doing well emotionally right now.

Current NIH funding slump represents: - Research labs closing - PhD students abandoning their dreams. - Trial participants left to their own devices mid study. - A halt to scientific progress and innovation for cancer, chronic and infectious diseases. - Minority health research terminated. Etc.
