I'm in the Star today with a piece on the Carney government's handling of relations with the United States. Last year, Canadians gave Mark Carney a mandate to disentangle our country from the empire to the south. By any reasonable standard, he's done the opposite. Link in first reply.

"In 2025 millions of Canadians rallied behind what they took to be a promise of renewed economic sovereignty and progressive nation-building. Over the past year, the government they elected has effectively delivered the exact opposite." #cdnpoli

Mark Carney promised to take on Donald Trump. He’s done anything but

While Prime Minister Mark Carney said he be “Elbows up” to Trump, his policy choices have essentially aligned Canada with America.

“They could be saying, ‘these socialists will literally kill you’, but are reduced to making scary faces while they say ‘free college’ & ‘abolish medical debt’ instead.” Socialism's Critics Are Running On Empty - @lukewsavage.bsky.social open.substack.com/pub/lukewsav...

Socialism's Critics Are Running On Empty

Throughout the 20th century, the appeal of socialism inspired genuine intellectual ferment on the reactionary right. Today, its critique of the left is completely out of gas.

I've been reading Shift Work for about four and a half years. It's a damn shame to see it go; I don't know where I'll get the lowdown on Canadian labo(u)r now.

My last article as the labour reporter at @pressprogress.ca is about.... media layoffs! Earlier this month, Rogers closed six stations and laid off 230 radio workers across the country. In Vancouver, the layoffs hit a newsroom that had struggled for years to unionize.

“A heretic, by definition, rejects or dissents from orthodoxy &, in doing so, inevitably collides with entrenched authority & power. Weiss, & the rest of her ilk, are fundamentally driven by a deep reverence for both.” - @lukewsavage.bsky.social open.substack.com/pub/lukewsav...

The reasonable middle has always been an elitist mirage

Bari Weiss's incompetent rebrand of CBS is just the 2000s-era reactionary "free thinker" grift adapted for the age of Donald Trump

This piece probably needs an update given how central AI has become to the aesthetics of the reactionary right. But I think the essence of the sketch holds, and Trump’s NFT collection was very much the perfect union of the MAGA visual sensibility with the MAGA ideology. Link in first reply.

One of the best things about British democracy is the fact it forces rich, privately-educated elites to wait around in grubby community centres then stand onstage next to goofy guys in costumes. Godspeed, Count Binface. [link in first reply]

For July 4th, the NYT ran a report on Norway that simultaneously lauded its social welfare institutions while ignoring its high levels of public ownership and dismissing the notion any of this has to do with socialism. That's historically blinkered and analytically unhelpful.

With the recent news that the CBC is losing Hockey Night in Canada, and that Rogers is taking over exclusive broadcast rights, the country is losing one of its most cherished cultural institutions. It didn't have to be like this.
