I still smell the smoke lingering in the air. I see tiny missed spots of blood dotting the grout and along the smooth white curtain. I'll stare at the red for hours, counting the drops, remembering her taste, restlessly motionless, waiting for her return- or not- what does it matter? It shouldn't. I close my eyes and dunk my head in the water. It was a risk I knew I had to take. Or else, no matter what, her life will remain empty and hollow, a void only filled by the shape of...A pixel art rendition of Mairi from In Her Riptide's Embrace, a pale blue mermaid bandaged around the waist curled up in a bathtub and surrounded by a white curtain, spotlighting her in the isolated and claustrophobic shower. Her gills are exposed on the side of her body, and her tail bends inwards like human legs in a similar fetal position of vulnerability.

In Her Riptide's Embrace was such a phenomenal entry to tyvnj2. It really brought together so much of what I love about mermaids. It's so fucking gut wrenching sometimes. And very cute. And terrifying... If you liked The Heart of Our Lagoon please read this one too.
