Bolsonaro had corrupt media on his side, Meta interference on his side, US propaganda operations, and his party's officials actively sabotaging public transport in Lula strongholds to prevent turnout. Yet he was still beaten by the power of voter turnout.
It worked and it will become a new model for democrats fighting the far-right. The campaign was bottom-up, distributed, rhizomatic. André Janones started it and then millions of people took the baton and ran for their lives in different directions. Beyond inspiring. Obrigada, Brasil! #Brazil
Political scientists who understand Portuguese, check what’s happening in Brazil. The bottom-up mobilization against Bolsonaro is remarkable. People are going to their local markets w chairs & free coffee to chat about politics w undecided voters, etc etc etc. If it works, it will become a new model
When we were shooting in Belgrade it was amazing to get to know the crew, who often bragged about marching behind their kids. On our last weekend 150k marched. “We dreamed of leaving Serbia” one crew guy said, “Our kids dream of making it a place worth staying in.” What a great start.

V niche but if you’re lucky enough to be considering visiting the Venice Biennale before it ends, I highly recommend it. Contemporary art feels increasingly derivative & performative. Not this time! The group show is gorgeous. Favourites: Ukraine, Latvia, Malta, Brazil. Moldova looks excellent too
I love this as a variation on a theme. Thelonius Monk once replied to someone who termed him a genius: "A genius is the one most like himself."
My friend Bruce Boyer is fond of saying that "style is being yourself on purpose." Thus, to develop a wardrobe that lasts 10+ years, the first question isn't "Who makes quality clothes?" It's "Who am I?" In 2022, WSJ put Stephen Colbert on the cover of their magazine, styling him in trendy clothes.
And the same thing is beginning to happen with the threat posed by the US
A decade on, British politics and society still doesn’t grasp the nature of the threat posed to it by Russia.

The backstory: Ukrainian drones struck a Yandex supercomputer facility in Vladimir, taking it out. Suddenly, bot activity in US social media fell by 49%, confirming suspicions that this was the site of a massive Russian influence operation targeting US social media—mostly targeting MAGA.
The exaggeration that drove critics to label minor infractions as a major cultural rot, or students protesting as akin to to Maoism, left then unable to respond to an actual authoritarian movement when it arrived. So they try to salvage their prior work by making bizarre comparisons. e.g. woke right
Dear tv and radio producers. Thankyou for the invitation. But, no, I do not want to appear on your show to defend the idea that I am English, after 50 years of living and working here, because the increasingly feral right want to turn this into a "debate" and you cannot see how you're being played

Unfortunately, that’s not where the UK is. Its approach continues to be negative, transactional, ill-informed and stubborn. 10 years after Brexit, and considering the quality of the British civil service, this is an achievement of sorts.
Hence why for the UK to achieve its aims in Brussels, whether that be on Made in Europe or even rejoin, it would need to be all over the Brussels bubble debate, well-informed, bringing positive ideas, arranging events, generally being positive. encompass-europe.com/comment/how-...

Another great piece by @samfr.bsky.social on the route back into the EU for the UK. That said, one thing that is massively underappreciated in the UK is the EU's own appetite to begin membership talks with the UK. samf.substack.com/p/the-route-...

Remarkable shift in German industry thinking on China. From new BDI paper: “Even if de-risking entails costs, including in the form of counter-reactions, passivity would in the long term be economically considerably more costly & irresponsible from a security-policy perspective”

I'm not sure folks have realized just how crazy the second half of 2026 and 2027 will be for global temperatures – on the back of a record-smashing El Niño event. Here is my latest estimate of where both years will end up compared to global temperatures since 1850.
